Giselle - Royal Ballet and Opera in London
First performed in 1841, Giselle is a French Romantic ballet about a young peasant woman who falls in love with a nobleman, Albrecht. When she learns that Albrecht is promised to another, she kills herself, and her spirits join the Wilis: the vengeful ghosts of jilted women, hell-bent on killing any men who cross their path in a brutal dance to the death. A guilty Albrecht, visiting Giselle's grave, finds himself haunted by the Wilis and the ghost of his lover, putting his life on the line.
Peter Wright's enchanting, heartbreaking production of this timeless ballet was first created for the Royal Ballet in 1985. With visually stunning designs by John Macfarlane and a breath-taking score by Adolphe Adam, it creates two vivid and distinct worlds, transporting audiences from the idyllic pastoral landscapes of Act I to the menacing, ghostly underworld of Act II. Packed with themes of infatuation, betrayal, and redemption, filled with spectral beauty and a captivating, tragic story, Giselle is one of the most beloved ballets of the 19th century Romantic genre.
