Harvey in London

Harvey – Immortalised by Hollywood's James Stewart

You're looking for a hilarious night out. But you also love a touch of class. You've found it in the guise of this Pulitzer prize-winning comedy immortalised by the 1950 movie starring Hollywood's James Stewart. This latest production stars the wonderful James Dreyfus as Elwood P. Dowd and the equally marvellous Maureen Lipman as his troubled sister Veta.

Harvey - The story

There's only one thing wrong with the mild mannered, middle aged Elwood P. Dowd. Other than that he's perfectly sane and sensible. He's convinced his best friend is a six foot rabbit called Harvey, a creature so extraordinary it can actually stop time dead in its tracks.

Elwood, being a friendly and affable chap, happily introduces his rabbit friend to everyone he comes across. His sister Veta is a real social climber with here beady eye firmly fixed on social success. She is increasingly embarrassed by her brother's behaviour. When she decides to have him committed to an asylum to save her and her equally snobby daughter Myrtle Mae from further humiliation, things soon start to go wrong.

The young, handsome psychiatrist Dr. Sanderson commits Veta instead of Elwood, but when the truth finally emerges the chase is on. Will they capture Elwood and his invisible companion?

Elwood eventually rolls up at the asylum looking for Harvey, who he's lost in the interim. He's about to be given a special injection to bring him back to normal when... well, we don't want to spoil the story for you. Let's just say the whole thing is a brilliant comedy of errors and the ending is satisfyingly unexpected.

This new version is produced by Don Gregory. The designer is Peter McKintosh, lighting is by Howard Harrison and sound by Paul Groothuis. Dreyfus and Lipman are joined by Felicity Dean, Ingrid Oliver, Amanda Boxer, David Bamber, Desmond Barrit, Sally Scott, Youssef Kerkour, Jack Hawkins and Linal Haft.

You might remember the 1950 film. Even if you already know the plot this deliciously clever production is an unmissable treat for anyone who loves their comedy theatre eccentric, quirky and warm. Lovely stuff, a feel-good comedy treat for anyone who has ever had an imaginary friend... or wished they had one!

Subtly funny

It's always hard to match James Stewart but the show was really good. All acting was spot on. I wouldn't pay top whack for the tickets but the theatre is comfy and I'd recommend it if you can get cheaper tickets. The set design was really well done.
