King Charles III in London
King Charles III – Hilarious new political writing
We've been spoiled for political choice in theatreland recently, with a run of seriously funny, witty and weird political plays on offer. This, following on from the successes of The Duck House and Handbagged, is a classic in the making, a highly unusual piece of observation that, while pure fantasy, references the concerns of the monarchy, the characters of those concerned and the political climate as a whole.
Mike Bartlett's excellent play is, according to The Telegraph's reviewer, 'the most spectacular, gripping and wickedly entertaining piece of lèse-majesté that British theatre has ever seen and, I have to admit, I enjoyed every minute of it.'
Think Shakespeare and you get a hint of what's to come. The play takes a leaf out of the Bard's book, mostly written in blank verse with a suitably witty twist.
King Charles the Third - The story
This amazing play imagines what might happen when Queen Elizabeth dies and Charles, Prince of Wales, finally comes in line for the throne. It's extremely funny while being genuinely moving, and the production by the Almeida's Rupert Goold is tipped as superb.
The end result is both politically thoughtful and culturally astute, a bullseye of a pop at the British monarchy, the institutions they represent and the personalities involved.
Performed on a raised purple platform known as a dais, the opening scene reveals the Queen's funeral. At Charles' first meeting as prospective King, where he hooks up with the Labour Prime Minister, he reveals he has no intention of following his mother's example. He takes his own controversial route, as you'd expect from such an interesting and independent person, first refusing to sign a political bill imposing restrictions on the media. The resulting constitutional furore is followed by civil unrest as Charles then decides to dissolve Parliament itself.
It's all hypothetical. But Mike Bartlett is an extremely canny writer and his exploration of the future King's morality and mores acts to bring a vital question to the fore: do the British people really want an unelected monarch overruling the nation's democratically elected government? Make up your own mind as this splendidly entertaining theatrical feast unfolds.

A delight! The play lived up to the hype. It was more sombre than anticipated; at the same time, I laughed a lot more than I expected. Wyndham's theatre is lovely, I had seat D3 (balcony), one of the cheapest seats and supposedly restricted view but I could see the entire stage. All in all, a great experience!

A new dawn awaits!A wonderful portrayal of the royal family, critical but not viscous. The acting was superb, and Tim Piggott Smith shone in the lead role. There were some witty and poignant moments. The irony of Charles not wanting to censor the press in view of Diana's death was clever

Laugh, cry, and think - wonderful! The present production is due to close 31 January 2015. If at all possible, see it within that time; otherwise, see it if opened elsewhere. Brilliant in all respects, especially the use of blank verse and Shakespearean flavour in the thoroughly modern concept. A great story, which brings laughs sometimes as well as compassion for the beleaguered king, but also really makes you think.

Curate's EggTim Pigott-Smith was superb; Tafline Steen excellent; and the music wonderful. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the rest of the cast and the story. The play is 30 minutes too long and a poor King Lear facsimile; without Tim Pigott-Smith's outstanding performance it would have been a severe disappointment.
