Les Liaisons Dangereuses in London

In pre-revolutionary France, the wealthy and elite scheme and backstab in the glittery salons of Paris, where reputation is everything. The Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil and the Vicomte Sebastien de Valmont are a pair of amoral, scheming, and power-hungry lovers-turned-rivals who amuse themselves by ruining others. The Marquise is determined to corrupt the young Cecile, the fiancee of her former lover, while the Vicomte sets out to seduce the virtuous and married Madame de Tourvel. What follows is a deadly game of love, lies, and psychological warfare.

Choderlos de Laclos's classic 18th century novel shocked and fascinated audiences with its dark sexuality, biting wit, and psychological complexity, and has continued to influence modern culture, even inspiring the 1999 cult classic Cruel Intentions. This thrilling story of manipulation, seduction, and betrayal offers a scathing commentary on social vice through de Laclos's witty portrait of the French nobility. Now it comes to the National Theatre in a gripping new revival of Christopher Hampton's acclaimed stage adaptation of the novel, directed by award-winning director Marianne Elliott. It features a brilliantly talented cast, with Aidan Turner playing the charismatic, dangerous Vicomte de Valmont, Lesley Manville starring at the scheming, ambitious Marquise de Merteuil, and Monica Barbaro taking the role of the virtuous Madame de Tourval.

Don't miss this salacious, witty adaptation of one of the most scandalous novels in European literature.

Professional and memorising

The best show we have seen and we are regular theatre goers. All actors were high level professionals and Aidan Turner was memorising his performance far excelled the original version and the movie of 1980s adding a touch of realism with humour and real passion. The adaptation from movie to stage was brilliant absolutely loved it thank you so much to all the stage performers and the incredible producer Diane Courtnell and family

Impressive staging. Wonderful acting and dancing

Whilst we loved the play style, we often missed some of the dialogue particularly when the actors had to speak quietly. That meant that we didn’t get some of the humorous quips.

Fantastic - a must see!

Everything about the play was amazing - acting , sound, staging - I could go on. I was enthralled. The only point for improvement is the toilets at the Littleton theatre. You need twice as many. Waiting for the loo for so long was the only negative thing about the experience.

A glittering show

This is a well-known story of scandelous intrigue in the Paris of 1779, and of course, the stars are even more well-known. Lesley Manville is wonderful, and Aidan Turner is the ladies' heartthrob from the Poldark series. The costumes and stagecraft are dazzling.

We left 30 minutes into it

We bought the tickets 5 months in advance - thats how excited we were to attend it - but found it so insufferable we had to leave 30 minutes into the 3-hour runtime.

A storyline that is uncomfortable today

Great acting and imaginative staging did little to relieve the discomfort of a central character who is basically a rapist. Accept the expectations of the era it was set in and the discomfort eases if not completely disappears. Loved the music and the dancing
