Memphis – Witness musical history in the making
The original concept for Memphis came from the famous US theatre producer George W. George way back in the early 2000s. The musical’s first appearances in Beverly, Massachusetts and Mountain View, California, set the stage for something much bigger.
When the show eventually hit Broadway in 2009 it became an instant hit, gathering a Golden Icon award for Best Musical in the Live Theatre plus a total of four coveted Tony awards, including Best Musical plus four awards from Drama Desk… thus a shining musical star was born.
The show finally left Broadway three years later with 30 previews and more than 1100 regular performances under its belt. The British version stars the wonderful Beverley Knight, the undisputed queen of UK soul. The original show tunes come courtesy of the Grammy-winning David Bryan, who was also one of the original founders of the rock band Bon Jovi. And the storyline is even more gripping than you might expect, because it has its roots in the truth.
Written by the seriously talented writer Joe DiPietro, Memphis is an exhilarating blend of fantastic music, raw energy and soaring emotion. If you fancy raising the roof in remembrance of one of the music scene’s most thrilling periods, this one’s for you.
Memphis - The story
Coming your way fresh from a 55 city tour and a smash hit run on Broadway, Memphis is tipped as the West End’s next big musical hot property. The story takes place against a backdrop of seamy underground nightclubs in 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, where a brand new musical era is about to dawn.
Rock and roll, the blues and gospel are about to change the music scene forever, and one young white DJ’s life is about to change just as much as he falls in love with a beautiful black club diva, and takes on the challenge of getting her on mainstream US radio. His efforts fly in the face of American culture, and ultimately help fire up a music revolution that has repercussions right across the world.
Beverley Knight stars in some shows but not all. As a rule she won’t be appearing in Monday evening or Wednesday matinee performances. If you’re dedicated fan, make sure you she will be on stage for the performance you’re booking.

Brilliant show with fantastic signing
The show itself was brilliant, with an OK story line (for a musical!). It was both funny and also making a strong point about white/black segregation in the USA south in the 50s. Both the lead actors, Berlinda Knight and Matt Cardale were outstanding.
Simon London Box Office customer
This is definitely the best show I've seen on the West End! Incredible, loved each part! Last 2 weeks, so book your tickets now!!!

Bee bop Romp!
A latter day `Good Morning Vietnam`...a clever selection of location /venues and acting roles completing the substitution for the ones featured in the Robin Williams epic. A true salutation, in that case, for the male and female lead in Memphis. Solid support roles, good sets & exciting choreography ensures regular full houses at the dated theatre.

Wow, this show is a must
From the moment the curtain lifted, it was non stop, fast paced entertainment. There wasn't. Note or foot wrong. Beverley Knights voice is amazing and it's hard to pick out a favourite over all the actors and actresses singing, dancing ect. Matt Cardle, well, what can I say, he rocked as the very sweet Hughie. I think lots of the crew are highly under rated. utterly brilliant from start to finish. Thank you for complete entertainment.

Great entertainment, music, singing and dancing superb.
Beverley Knight is the star of the show, she has a remarkable talent and a voice which resonates in an outstanding way from the moment she appears on the stage and sings her first note. She is exceptional but the rest of the cast is excellent also. The male lead, the actors, dancers and singers and the wonderful orchestra/band behind the scenes, all super class. This is a must for all theatregoers enjoying a musical, this has to rate the best musical in London at the present time. By a long stretch.

Amazing entertainment a must see
The leading roles were the best choice possible, Beverley knight is awesum her voice is just amazing gives me goosebumps when I hear her sing. The other singers complemented the lead roles too, the other cast members acting wasn't the best but were ok. Mat cardle impressed me with his acting I was blown away with his abilities not just with his singing which we all know he is brilliant but his acting was pretty incredible. The man who played the old guy I was very impressed with too. Mat and Beverley complimented each other with their duests impeccably I was blown away by the whole show it has got to be up there with my top 3 DEFINATELY .

Memphis is a cracking show
Went to see this on wed7oct , the matinee and was not busy and the star names where not performing, not a problem , the replacements where fantastic and I can't believe the star names could have been any better at all, didn't know anything about the show so didn't know what to expect, it was a great love story with the main topic being racism in the50 s, the music was powerful and there were many funny bits as well, best show I've been too, would highly recommend it.

A great entertaining family show
This show is a must see if you like theatre. It is lively, vibrant and very entertaining. Beverly Knight is an amazing performer. Matt Cardle was not performing on this evening however Jon Robyns did a great performance. Please do not be put off seeing the show if Matt is not due to perform, it is an up lifting, entertaining show. It does hit on some segregation issues of the 1950's in the USA of the time, but this can be an education for some. Visit the show and enjoy.

Loved the show especially the two leads who had incredible voices and sung with passion. Great story although not true it was based on things around that time. Cast amazing and moved really well too. A real soulful treat

Took my teenager daughter to see the show. Late booking so didn't know much about the story, or have any preconceptions about what to expect. Both thoroughly enjoyed it. It was fun, fast moving, amusing and the singing was amazing. Very impressed by Matt Cardle's first acting role. Often find that shows where none of the songs are familiar are less enjoyable - this was not the case here. Thoroughly recommended!

This Broadway export of the Tony Award winning musical MEMPHIS to the West End, is very good news indeed for London theatregoers.
Although it has an original score that the majority of the audience didn’t know, it had everyone leaping to their feet and roaring their approval on the night I saw it. The likelyhood is you'll feel the same way.
The show tells the story of how Huey, a geeky, white Memphis DJ won't take no for an answer when he sets out to convince the mainstream record buying public that they should be listening to music from the black community, specifically as sung by his girlfriend, Felicia.
12 Jun 2014
