Memphis in London
Starring:
Beverley Knight
Memphis – Witness musical history in the making
The original concept for Memphis came from the famous US theatre producer George W. George way back in the early 2000s. The musical’s first appearances in Beverly, Massachusetts and Mountain View, California, set the stage for something much bigger.
When the show eventually hit Broadway in 2009 it became an instant hit, gathering a Golden Icon award for Best Musical in the Live Theatre plus a total of four coveted Tony awards, including Best Musical plus four awards from Drama Desk… thus a shining musical star was born.
The show finally left Broadway three years later with 30 previews and more than 1100 regular performances under its belt. The British version stars the wonderful Beverley Knight, the undisputed queen of UK soul. The original show tunes come courtesy of the Grammy-winning David Bryan, who was also one of the original founders of the rock band Bon Jovi. And the storyline is even more gripping than you might expect, because it has its roots in the truth.
Written by the seriously talented writer Joe DiPietro, Memphis is an exhilarating blend of fantastic music, raw energy and soaring emotion. If you fancy raising the roof in remembrance of one of the music scene’s most thrilling periods, this one’s for you.
Memphis - The story
Coming your way fresh from a 55 city tour and a smash hit run on Broadway, Memphis is tipped as the West End’s next big musical hot property. The story takes place against a backdrop of seamy underground nightclubs in 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, where a brand new musical era is about to dawn.
Rock and roll, the blues and gospel are about to change the music scene forever, and one young white DJ’s life is about to change just as much as he falls in love with a beautiful black club diva, and takes on the challenge of getting her on mainstream US radio. His efforts fly in the face of American culture, and ultimately help fire up a music revolution that has repercussions right across the world.
Beverley Knight stars in some shows but not all. As a rule she won’t be appearing in Monday evening or Wednesday matinee performances. If you’re dedicated fan, make sure you she will be on stage for the performance you’re booking.

The show itself was brilliant, with an OK story line (for a musical!). It was both funny and also making a strong point about white/black segregation in the USA south in the 50s. Both the lead actors, Berlinda Knight and Matt Cardale were outstanding.

A latter day `Good Morning Vietnam`...a clever selection of location /venues and acting roles completing the substitution for the ones featured in the Robin Williams epic. A true salutation, in that case, for the male and female lead in Memphis. Solid support roles, good sets & exciting choreography ensures regular full houses at the dated theatre.

From the moment the curtain lifted, it was non stop, fast paced entertainment. There wasn't. Note or foot wrong. Beverley Knights voice is amazing and it's hard to pick out a favourite over all the actors and actresses singing, dancing ect. Matt Cardle, well, what can I say, he rocked as the very sweet Hughie. I think lots of the crew are highly under rated. utterly brilliant from start to finish. Thank you for complete entertainment.

Beverley Knight is the star of the show, she has a remarkable talent and a voice which resonates in an outstanding way from the moment she appears on the stage and sings her first note. She is exceptional but the rest of the cast is excellent also. The male lead, the actors, dancers and singers and the wonderful orchestra/band behind the scenes, all super class. This is a must for all theatregoers enjoying a musical, this has to rate the best musical in London at the present time. By a long stretch.

The leading roles were the best choice possible, Beverley knight is awesum her voice is just amazing gives me goosebumps when I hear her sing. The other singers complemented the lead roles too, the other cast members acting wasn't the best but were ok. Mat cardle impressed me with his acting I was blown away with his abilities not just with his singing which we all know he is brilliant but his acting was pretty incredible. The man who played the old guy I was very impressed with too. Mat and Beverley complimented each other with their duests impeccably I was blown away by the whole show it has got to be up there with my top 3 DEFINATELY .

This show is a must see if you like theatre. It is lively, vibrant and very entertaining. Beverly Knight is an amazing performer. Matt Cardle was not performing on this evening however Jon Robyns did a great performance. Please do not be put off seeing the show if Matt is not due to perform, it is an up lifting, entertaining show. It does hit on some segregation issues of the 1950's in the USA of the time, but this can be an education for some. Visit the show and enjoy.
