Review: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING at The Globe Theatre

Much Ado About Nothing - Globe Theatre Ever since Emma Rice took the helm at The Globe the work coming out of the building has created an undeniable buzz of excitement, and after seeing Much Ado About Nothing, I can see why. Directed by Matthew Dunster, this production has been imaginatively reworked with his fresh approach to such a well-known story. This version is set in the Mexican Revolution of 1910, and while sometimes changes such as this can feel unnecessary and somewhat imposed on the script, this choice lifts the piece giving it a new, more contemporary life. In making this choice Dunster has made Shakespeare more accessible for its younger audiences, and in his own words this production will hopefully, “mean something new to an audience, or mean something to a new audience”.

Review: 42nd STREET at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane

42nd Street42nd Street was last seen at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane on London’s West End in 1984. Now playing at the same theatre as it did then, it is undeniably back where it belongs. Keeping its loyalty to the story yet putting a new and exciting spin on the show itself, this is the perfect revival of such an amazing old fashioned musical. The score is wonderful, and vividly brought to life by Jae Alexander and his 18 strong orchestra. With songs such as 'We're in the Money', 'Lullaby of Broadway' and the title number '42nd Street' this is one musical that will have you tapping your feet all the way home!

Review: MURDER BALLAD at The Arts Theatre

Murder Ballad The idea of using a murder ballad as the basis of a musical is an unusual concept and I was interested in how this was going to to work on stage within the musical theatre format. My preconception was that although murder ballads make great 4-minute songs, how is this going to work as a 90 minute musical? I need not have worried, we are clearly told at the beginning that the story will simply follow the format of these obsessive songs, and ‘in all great murder ballads, when songs of love-gone-wrong are sung, blood must be spilled, but by who?’ So as the love story begins, I know how it must end.

Review: BRIEFS at London Wonderground

Briefs - London Wonderground Back in London for its 4th season BRIEFS is a not for the faint hearted. In the words of our brilliantly bonkers host, this show ‘celebrates the freak’; and what a celebration it is.

As we enter The Spiegeltent in Wonderland at The Southbank, Ru Pauls ‘Sissy that walk’ is blasting through the speakers and we are transported into the wonderful world of cabaret. With the scantily clad waiters, dim lighting and revellers ready for a good time, everyone is waiting on tenterhooks for the show to begin. As the lights snap off, a single spot follows our host, Shivannah, work his way through the already adoring crowd.

Review: UNFAITHFUL at FOUND111

Unfaithful FOUND111 is a beautifully intimate pop up theatre in the centre of London’s West End and is the perfect venue for the London Premiere of Unfaithful, a relatively new play by Owen McCafferty, which was first commissioned at The Traverse Theatre in 2014.
