Operation Mincemeat in London

There’s nothing quite like a brand new musical to get the excitement going. It’s even better when the plot is as fascinating as this... and as true! The year is 1943, we’re losing the war, and the human horror that is Hitler is in the ascendant. How can Britain change the tide? As it turns out, a stolen corpse is just the ticket.

Described as, ‘Singin’ in the Rain meets Strangers on a Train, Noel Coward meets Noel Fielding’, Operation Mincemeat is the high octane, unbelievably funny yet true tale of an eccentric secret mission that helped the allies to win World War II. But how, exactly, did a smartly-dressed dead body do that? Come along and see how a deceased man ended up wrong-footing Hitler.

After hugely popular sell-out runs at New Diorama Theatre in 2019, and Southwark Playhouse during 2020, 21 and 22, along with an extended Riverside Studios run in summer 2022, Operation Mincemeat is transferring to the West End. You don’t want to miss out on Operation Mincemeat theatre tickets.

The critics are saying good things. As Suzi Feay says in the Financial Times, “There are some big, blowsy shows around in the West End, but this little belter is staging its own audacious invasion plan”. Neil Norman at the Daily Mirror calls it “a miraculous musical that tells the entire story in a kind of accelerated farce that is part Mel Brooks, part SIX, part Hamilton with a side order of One Man, Two Guvnors.” And Variety’s David Benedict says it’s a “little show with a very big future.”

What's the plot of Operation Mincemeat ?

Operation Mincemeat was a successful British deception operation during World War Two, designed to keep the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily secret from the Nazis. Members of British intelligence took the corpse of the unfortunate Glyndwr Michael, a tramp who died from eating rat poison, and dressed him up in the uniform of an officer of the Royal Marines, complete with ID. They planted documents on the body revealing plans for an allied invasion of Greece and Sardinia, and left the body in the sea off the coast of Spain, where it was eventually found and the ‘important’ papers passed to the enemy.

As a result of the false intelligence, German reinforcements were moved to Greece and Sardinia, leaving Sicily safe. While the full impact of the ruse isn’t known, Sicily was liberated faster than expected with much lower losses.

Press Reviews

Stiff upper lips abound in this stranger-than-fiction tale of second world war espionage, with Firth and Matthew Macfadyen in charge.

The Guardian

Operation Mincemeat would sink without its near-incessant humour – every line and tune is mined for its comedic potential (one of the early numbers about dead shrews is especially chortle-some). It would be easy for the show's whimsy to run away from itself, but the cast of five inject enough warmth and authenticity into the veritable trove of different characters to keep the piece grounded.

WhatsOnStage

A glittering Second World War musical that is funnier than Hamilton… totally brilliant… It has all the subtlety of an M4 Sherman tank crashing its way from one sketch to the next – and is all the better for it…the musical talent on display is exceptional.
