This new musical reimagines the story of the notorious Roman emperor Nero, exploring his ambitions as an artist and performer before his rise to power and his role in Rome's ultimate downfall. It has a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik (the duo behind the multi-award-winning Spring Awakening), with direction by Lindsay Posner (A View From the Bridge, Noises Off). Nero has been in development since at least 2006, and will now finally see its world premiere in London this autumn.
Playing the title role, Andrew Barth Feldman is best known for his Broadway roles in Dear Evan Hansen and Maybe Happy Ending, and for starring opposite Jennifer Lawrence in the film No Hard Feelings.
The creative team includes choreographer James Cousins, musical supervisor and vocal arranger Phil Bateman, musical director Ben McQuigg, designer Georgia Lowe, lighting designer Robbie Butler, and sound designer Tony Gayle.
Nero will play at Southwark Playhouse Elephant from 2 November to 5 December 2026, with a press night on 6 November.
