Where is Southwark Playhouse Elephant?
At Dante Place, 80 Newington Butts, SE11 4FL — the newer of the company's two buildings, about five minutes' walk from Elephant & Castle. It is a separate address from the Borough theatre, so check which one your ticket names before you set off: they are a ten-minute walk apart and it is an easy mistake to make. If you need step-free travel, note that the Northern line at Elephant & Castle is step free southbound only. Buses and Thameslink trains serve the area well.
Is Southwark Playhouse Elephant accessible, and is there a bar?
Yes to both. Being a recent building it was designed with access in mind: step-free entry, a lift, wheelchair spaces, accessible toilets and a hearing enhancement system, plus a bar for before the show and the interval. Access membership costs nothing, gives reduced prices and a free companion ticket where one is needed, and asks for no proof of disability. Captioned, signed and relaxed performances run through the season. Ring the box office rather than booking online if you need a particular seat held.
How big is the auditorium at Southwark Playhouse Elephant?
The main space seats up to 311, depending on how it is arranged — larger than either room at the Borough building, but still small enough that the back row is close to the stage. The seating is reconfigured for each production, so row and seat letters move between shows and it is worth checking the plan for the run you are booking rather than relying on a previous visit. A separate participation space is used for workshops and events rather than performances.
