Could a Small Scale Revival of Lloyd Webber's ASPECTS OF LOVE Make it a Hit at Last?

Aspects of Love - Southwark Playhouse ASPECTS OF LOVE, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1980's musical based on a gentle novel by David Garnett is transferring to the Southwark Playhouse from the 7 January 2019, after a critically acclaimed run at a fringe venue in Manchester.

It’s generally regarded as one of the composers near misses.

The popularity of the song LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING, as recorded by Michael Ball, and a generally positive critical reaction helped the original production achieve a respectable run in the West End but on Broadway it was famously destroyed by the New York Times critic and closed quickly.

My personal feeling is that it’s going to make much more sense in this up-close studio production where cast and audience can enjoy the nuance of its often delicate subtle score without the necessity for the scale of staging it needed to have credibility in a large conventional venue.

The press release reminds us that it’s the story of passion and love across three generations of a family in 1940s France and Italy.

Casting has been announced and we’re told “Joining the production will be Madalena Alberto (Les Misérables) who will play Giulietta Trapani and Eleanor Jackson who will join the ensemble. Returning will be Kelly Price (A Little Night Music) in the role of Rose, Felix Mosse (The Rocky Horror Show) as Alex, Jerome Pradon (Jesus Christ Superstar) as George, Jack Churms as Jerome/ensemble, Jason Kajdi (Our House) as Hugo, Julia J Nagle (An American in Paris) as Elizabeth/ensemble, Minal Patel (The Secret Garden) as Marcel and Eleanor Walsh as Jenny/ensemble.

The original production was to have starred the late James Bond actor, Roger Moore, but a few weeks after this was announced things clearly weren't going well in rehearsals and he withdrew.
