The Children follows Hazel and Robin, two retired nuclear scientists living in the aftermath of a catastrophe, on the edge of a radiation exclusion zone. Hazel practices yoga and Robin brews parsnip wine as they try to cling to a semblance of normalcy. But all that changes when their old friend and colleague Rose knocks on their door, bringing old memories, buried secrets, and a plan to clean up the mess that they made, one which will test Hazel and Robin's loyalty and forces them to confront the limits of their debt to the next generation.
Lucy Kirkwood's fiercely clever and timely play explores themes of inter-generational accountability, personal morality, and the environmental crisis. Artistic Director Rachel O'Riordan will direct this revival.
Olivier Award-nominated Dame Meera Syal (A Tupperware of Ashes, Noises Off) stars as Hazel, returning to the Lyric stage for the first time since Noises Off in 2019. Joining her are Declan Conlon (Faith Healer, The Playboy of the Western World) as Robin and Kerry Fox (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Shallow Grave) as Rose.
The creative team includes Set & Costume Design by Gary McCann, Lighting Design by Anna Watson, Sound Design by Holly Khan and Casting by Anna Cooper CDG.
In a production marking the play’s 10th anniversary, The Children will run at the Lyric Hammersmith from Wednesday 02 September - Saturday 03 October 2026.
