London Box Office 29 June, 2026, 00:01

James Norton is set to take on one of theatre's most iconic roles, playing the title character in a new West End production of Shakespeare's Hamlet, conceived and directed by the celebrated Thomas Ostermeier. The production is scheduled for Autumn 2027, with a theatre and exact dates to be confirmed. It is produced by Wessex Grove — winners of The Stage Award for Best Producer 2026 — and Gavin Kalin Productions.

Norton described the opportunity as both a privilege and a challenge, expressing his confidence in Ostermeier's direction and his excitement to explore where the collaboration might take him.

Best known to TV audiences as Ormund Hightower in HBO's House of the Dragon, Norton is also set to appear on the big screen as Brian Epstein — the Beatles' legendary manager — in Sam Mendes' eagerly anticipated four-film series The Beatles, alongside Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Barry Keoghan and Joseph Quinn. His most recent stage appearance was in Ivo Van Hove's acclaimed adaptation of Hanya Yanagihara's A Little Life, which played to sell-out audiences at the Harold Pinter and Savoy theatres in the West End.

Thomas Ostermeier is one of the most influential figures in contemporary European theatre. As Artistic Director of the Schaubühne Berlin since 1999, he has earned international acclaim for his bold reinterpretations of classic works, and has been honoured with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. London audiences will recognise his recent productions of The Seagull with Cate Blanchett at the Barbican and An Enemy of the People with Matt Smith in the West End — both produced by Wessex Grove. Significantly, this new production will mark Ostermeier's first time directing Shakespeare in English, making it a landmark occasion for West End theatregoers.

Ostermeier himself noted that his original Hamlet production has been touring the world for 18 years, making this fresh take — in English, and in London — a particularly meaningful undertaking, with Norton in mind as a perfect Prince of Denmark.
