Based on the gothic novel by Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre follows the titular Jane, now grown from an orphan girl to an independent woman, who begins working at the dark, beautiful Thornwood Hall, where she finds herself drawn to its mysterious owner, Edward Rochester. But soon she finds herself caught up in a web of secrets and lies as she unravels the truth behind Rochester's past.
Jane Eyre the Musical first premiered in Toronto in 1996 and was subsequently produced on Broadway in 2000, where it was nominated for five Tony Awards. Thirty years on, the 2026 staging is being co-directed by by RSC and National Theatre director John Caird, who previously adapted and co-directed the original production of Les Misérables as well as the critically acclaimed stage adaptation of Spirited Away, and Broadway's Megan McGinnis, star of Beauty and the Beast, Little Women and Beetlejuice. The full cast and creative team will be announced soon.
John Caird said: “I’m so pleased to have the opportunity to explore a new version of Jane Eyre in the beautifully intimate Southwark Playhouse Elephant. It's always a pleasure to work on this timeless romance but all the more exciting to be collaborating with the brilliant and innovative Megan McGinnis as co-director.”
