Sheridan Smith returns to the West End in Shirley Valentine

Multi-award winning actress Sheridan Smith is returning to the West End stage in a new production of Shirley Valentine.

Directed by Matthew Dunster, the production will run at London's Duke of York Theatre from 17 February for 12 weeks.

What is Shirley Valentine about?

Written by Willy Russell, Shirley Valentine is a one-woman comedic play that's known for its joyous and life-affirming plot.

Shirley Valentine (played by Sheridan Smith) has lost herself within a marriage and motherhood, but she has a secret dream that she's keeping from everyone around her. Hidden in her bag is a plane ticket, and one day she may just leave a note that says, 'Gone to Greece'.

The show's cast and creatives have shelves of awards to their names.

The original production won its writer, Willy Russell, his third Olivier Award. His career spans across five decades, and includes iconic work like Educating Rita and Blood Brothers.

Sheridan Smith has won multiple awards including two Olivier Awards and a BAFTA. Speaking about her involvement in the show, Sheridan said: "As a mum now myself I'm delighted to be playing theatre's best-loved mum and I am honoured to be entrusted by Willy Russell to bring his Shirley to life once again in the West End".

Sheridan is no stranger to the West End, having performed in multiple theatre productions. This includes playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Fanny Brice in Funny Girl and most recently, the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Shirley Valentine's director, Matthew Dunster, has been nominated for an Olivier Award on three occasions. His most recent work includes the Broadway production of Hangmen, and 2:22 A Ghost Story at the Criterion Theatre.

The show's producer David Pugh has won five Olivier Awards, and two Tony Awards.

Shirley Valentine's other creatives include designer Paul Wills, lighting design by Lucy Carter and sound design by Ian Dickinson for Autograph.
