West Side Story revival coming to the National Theatre in 2027

A couple of months ago, we speculated whether West Side Story could be coming to London. It's now been announced that a revival of this Tony Award-winning musical will be opening at the National Theatre's Olivier Theatre in autumn 2027.

Featuring a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story first premiered on Broadway in 1957 and has inspired multiple adaptations, revivals, and international productions. Conceived by Jerome Robbins and inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the musical is set in a multiracial blue-collar neighbourhood in Manhattan's Upper West Side in the 1950s. Set against the bloody rivalry between two street gangs, the Puerto Rican Sharks and the white Jets, it follows the love story between Tony and Maria, who hail from different sides of the gang war.

The revival will be co-directed by Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell, who previously collaborated on Death of a Salesman at the Young Vic, in the West End and on Broadway. Robbins’ choreography will be reproduced and adapted by performer and choreographer Julio Monge, who previously worked on the choreography for Steven Spielberg's 2021 film adaptation. This will be the first major London revival since 1998.
