The Oresteia in London
Aeschylus's epic Greek tragedy, written over two millennia ago, is a powerful saga of revenge, power, and justice. The trilogy follows the young Orestes in the bloody fallout of the Trojan War during the power struggle within the House of Atreus. Orestes finds himself caught in a multi-generational cycle of violence as his parents, Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, wage a private war of vengeance. This bold new adaptation will bring a modern vision to this ancient play, aiming to raise timeless questions about morality and the cost of war. In this modernised adaptation, a contemporary family wakes up in a Greek myth and can't seem to find a way out of their hellish destiny.
The Oresteia is brought to the stage by critically acclaimed Australian director Simon Stone, returning to the Bridge Theatre following his triumphant staging of The Lady from the Sea. Stone is known for his radical reimaginings of classic works, including Yerma and Phaedra. He will reunite with the same creative team behind The Lady from the Sea, including set designer Lizzie Clachan, costume designer Mel Page, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, and casting director Jessica Ronane CDG, with music by Stefan Gregory. For lovers of the Classics, this will be a thrilling, unmissable opportunity to experience one of the greatest Greek tragedies in a whole new light, which promises to offer a searing commentary on the relevance of Aeschylus’s work to the modern age.

Cheating the audienceIt was the worst play I have seen all year. Dreadful acting even worse script if that's possible without the work 'fuck' there would not be a 1st act. Orestia it is not. It completely cheated the audience. It was the worst play I have ever seen at the Bridge Theatre. I doubt I'll go to that Theatre again.

Overawed!This performance was phenomenal. I was swallowed up by the story, the interpretation, the absolutely brilliantly created set, the acting - from every single member of the team - and the capacity to create such a believable and immersive performance. My admiration for the energy and commitment from the cast, they must have been drained after such a long, and emotional, performance. A special comment to George Renshaw as he stepped in to the shoes of Angie - seamlessly supported by the rest of the crew. What a treat of an evening … I cannot praise or thank enough. Thank you!

Stunning but demanding theatreThis powerful reworking of a Greek Tragedy packs quite a punch but you have to concentrate as the first act is quite Difficult to Follow but the acting and stagecraft carry you along. Then it is all systems go for ultra emotional Greek tragedy. Though long the play seems to unfold swiftly and the pace is rapid. Sets are fab and the acting highly skilful but could have done with some clearer projection but overall a memorable experience

Powerful but gory at timesI think it’s good to know the story before you step inside as it makes you aware of what you will face - it’s an incredible story based on the Greek tragedy of King Agamemnon and his family. Each act has its highlights but for me the actors, the dialogue, the body language is what made this play outstanding.

Adult, intellectual accurate interpretation of the Greek Tragedy style in modern times.My emailed tickets sent 24 hrs before the performance said the play starts at 19:30. BUT the printed ticket received at box office said 19:00. WE MISSED THE FIRST 30 minutes of the play because of this ERROR. This made the rest of the play confusing even though it was a great performance. We came 6,000 miles to see this play and were very frustrated by this disconnect. Why didn’t anyone email me a correction of the start time?

A really clever Set.Due to the fact that I did not receive notice of the time change, we missed the first fifteen minutes, leading to confusion. My impression of the performance was that the actors, all miked, were unbalanced. Some very harsh. At times difficult to hear what they were saying. The play seemed to be mostly people screaming at each other , punctuated by too many « fucks ». All just too frenetic. This play should have had a different title, “Agamemnon” did not kill his daughter, she committed suicide. The rest of the audience loved it, they all stood up and screamed.
