Ragtime in London

Thom Sutherland directs a new production of Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Terrence McNally's multi Tony award winning muscial, Ragtime.

It is the turn of the 20th Century in New York. An era is exploding. A century is spinning. And the people are moving in rhythm and rhyme to the music of Ragtime. Based on the novel by E.L Doctorow, Ragtime weaves together the story of three groups in America, represented by Coalhouse Walker Jr, a Harlem musician; Mother and her white, middle class family in New Rochelle; and Tateh, a Jewish immigrant who has come to America with his daughterseeking a new life. Their fictional lives become dramatically intertwined with one another as well as with historical figures including Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, JP Morgan and Henry Ford.

Ragtime led the 1998 Tony Awards with 12 nominations, winning 4 including Best Book by Terrence McNally and Best Original Score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

A great night at the theatre

Saw Ragtime at Regents Park Open Air Theatre a couple of years ago, and there is no comparison, Charing Cross Theatre production was just so much better in every way cast, sets music, just a great night at the theatre, and deserved the almost full house standing ovation. After seeing Titanic at CCT I never thought you could better that production, but I feel you have done it with Ragtime

Fantastic

Well done production, the story relevant to what is happening in our world today. Very ambitious story possibly covering too many issues, felt a tad overwhelmed at times. The staging was fantastic, the musicians as characters was woven in beautifully. Stephen Flaherty's music was wonderful. Was exhausted by the end, only criticism would be that it's a little too long. Other than that would highly recommend. Well done to actors, musicians, director............all involved. Plus, loved the theatre, gorgeous performing space & wonderful to watch a production.

A new regime brings musicals to the Charing Cross Theatre

by Phil Willmott | Friday, March 11 2016, 09:57

Charing Cross Theatre Great news from the Charing Cross Theatre where my friends, the director Thom Southerland and producer Danielle Tarento are to helm a new season of musical theatre.

They kick off with a re-staging of their highly acclaimed production of TITANIC, originally seen at the Southwark Playhouse in 2013, revived with great success in Canada and long tipped for a central London run.
