Raymonda description

You want to immerse yourself in a fascinating story of love and courage in wartime. You adore ballet. This is a perfect match – welcome to Raymonda, inspired by the extraordinary spirit of Florence Nightingale and the brave nurses who joined her to treat the men wounded on the filthy battlefields of the Crimean war. This is Tamara Rojo's Raymonda.

Tamara Rojo is the Artistic Director of English National Ballet. She's responsible for this brilliant version of the classic ballet that remains faithful to Alexander Glazunov's dazzlingly lovely score. The choreography comes from the legendary Marius Petipa and the story has been given a contemporary twist thanks to a feisty heroine who is completely in charge of her own destiny.

The world premiere of Raymonda by English National Ballet is on at the magnificent London Coliseum during January 2022. This contemporary classic represents Rojo's first involvement in choreography and direction, and she has adapted the original three-act production for modern audiences. The result is a rarely performed ballet that's as unusual as it is compelling.

What's the plot of Raymonda?

This beautiful ballet whisks us away into the past, to England in 1853. Raymonda has run away from her comfortable but dull life to be a nurse in the Crimean War. While there she gets engaged to John, a soldier, but when she develops strong feelings for John's friend Abdur, a particularly impressive member of the Ottoman army, her own confusion mirrors the turmoil of the war that surrounds her. Who will she end up with?

Who is Raymonda for?

A ballet concerning war, Raymonda doesn't come with an age recommendation... yet. But it's probably suitable for everyone who loves ballet, and who can sit still, be quiet, and enjoy the performance. Children under 5 are not allowed in the auditorium.
