What is Rent about?

With a book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, Rent follows a group of impoverished young bohemians living in Manhattan's East Village, navigating love and loss, trying to make it as artists while grappling with the realities of poverty, and living with the invisible, inevitable threat of HIV/AIDS. It is loosely based on Puccini's classic opera, La Boheme, and features unforgettable songs such as 'Rent', 'La Vie Boheme', 'Take Me or Leave Me', and 'Seasons of Love'. Rent is one of the most beloved pieces of theatre of all time, notable for revitalising a love for musical theatre among young people and for its ground-breaking portrayal of people with HIV/AIDS.

With four Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama under its belt, Rent ran on Broadway for 12 years and had its West End premiere in 1998. This new production is directed by WhatsOnStage and Olivier Award winner Luke Sheppard, who previously staged a revival of Rent at the Hope Mill Theatre in 2020 and 2021, which forms the inspiration behind this 2026 revival. Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things) will play Mark Cohen, a struggling film-maker who is the central narrator of the musical.
