Songs for a New World in London

Songs For a New World – A beautiful song cycle, perfect for our times

Roll back time to 1995 and Songs for a New World was a new musical theatre piece written and composed by Jason Robert Brown. It was his first production, originally showing Off-Broadway earlier in the same year. Brown and his director Daisy Prince put together a bunch of tunes he'd written for other venues and events, and the result was a fascinating blend that wasn't a musical play or a revue. It was more like a theatrical song cycle, and it proved incredibly popular.

This beautiful, highly unusual stage piece was created by Jason Robert Brown in 1995. It's a kind of abstract musical, a series of songs connected by the theme of 'the moment of decision'. It was produced Off-Broadway in '95 and hit home instantly, claiming hearts and minds. Now it's over here, on at the Vaudeville theatre and set to thrill audiences all over again with its wonderfully unusual, completely unforgettable beauty.

About the show

Expect four astonishing performers whose characters develop constantly throughout the show in a unique way. As the composer, Jason Robert Brown, says, this show is all about one, single moment. That moment when you hit a wall and find yourself having to make a choice, take a stand, or even turn tail and head back where you came from. The score is vocally demanding, which only adds to its power.

The original Off-Broadway production ran in 1995 for a short time. It premiered in the UK during 2001, at the Bridewell theatre, directed by Clive Paget and starring Golda Rosheuvel, Craig Purnell, Sarah Redmond and Nigel Richards. A New York revival in 2008 starred a 14 person youth ensemble as well as the four main performers, all directed by Debbie Slevin.

2015 saw the show revived at the St James theatre in London with Cynthia Erivo, Jenna Russell, Damian Humbley and Dean John-Wilson, directed by Adam Lenson. In July 2020, as Covid-19 raged across the planet, The Other Palace (previously called St James theatre) revived Songs for a New World again, this time directed by Séimí Campbell and starring Rachel John, Ramin Karimloo, Cedric Neal and Rachel Tucker, along with Shem Omari James. Thanks to the virus a digital production was filmed in isolation, weaving in lots of relevant contemporary news footage.

In early October 2020 it transferred to the London Palladium for just two socially distant showings, again with John, Neal, Tucker and Omari James starring, plus David Hunter and an ensemble of third year Mountview Academy students.

Now the London Palladium production is set to enjoy an official West End transfer, running from early February 2021 at the Vaudeville Theatre. The stars of the Palladium production will reprise their roles for a month's worth of delicious, thoughtful and wholly relevant music. Beautiful!
