About South Pacific

South Pacific description

South Pacific – Starring Julian Ovenden and Gina Beck

Chichester Festival Theatre is where this wonderful production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic musical South Pacific was born. Now it’s transferring to Sadler's Wells in 2022 for a strictly limited season in the West End.

The theatre’s Artistic Director Daniel Evans, a cast of over 30 and a full orchestra are on the cards for a production that has delighted the critics. Julian Ovenden leads the cast as Emile de Becque, loved for his work in Bridgerton, Downton Abbey, Merrily We Roll Along, and Grand Hotel. Gina Beck plays Ensign Nellie Forbush, and the rest of the cast is yet to be announced.

The show is stuffed with legendary show tunes including Some Enchanted Evening, I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair, and Bali Ha'i, and it inspired standing ovations in Chichester night after night.

The South Pacific Tour 2022 is produced by Jamie Wilson, Jonathan Church Theatre Productions and Gavin Kalin. It’s directed by Daniel Evans, with set and costume design by Peter McKintosh, and choreography and movement direction from Ann Yee. Musical Supervisor comes from Nigel Lilley. The Musical Director is Cat Beveridge and there’s some splendid new orchestration by David Cullen.

The original Broadway orchestration is by Robert Russell Bennett. The lighting designer is Howard Harrison, and sound design comes from Paul Groothuis. Video design is by Gillian Tan, additional arrangements and Happy Talk orchestration by Theo Jamieson, and the casting director is Charlotte Sutton CDG. Additional children’s casting is by Verity Naughton.

What's the plot of South Pacific?

Meet an ordinary girl from Little Rock USA and an older French planter she met one enchanted evening while working as a nurse at a military hospital. While they’re waiting to go to action in the South Pacific, the sailors and nurses put on a musical comedy show. As the war edges closer, the relationship between Nellie Forbush and Emile de Becque becomes serious.

Who is South Pacific for?

This Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is recommended for anyone old enough to appreciate a powerful love story set in wartime.
