Speed-the-Plow in London

Speed-the-Plow – Following in the footsteps of Madonna

The role of Karen was first played in 1988 by Madonna. 12 months later the show premiered in London and was revived three times to great critical acclaim, most recently in 2008. The play has been nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play and Best Direction of a Play, plus a Tony for Best Actor. And it has since been put on stage numerous times across the world, in schools, colleges and small venues as well as regional and national theatres.

Speed-the-Plow - The story

When a glittering movie star, whose appearances always delivers a lucrative box office hit, agrees to take a part in a film produced by Bobby Gould and Charlie Fox, the men are certain this is the big break they've always dreamed about.

Everything is going perfectly until the temporary secretary Karen, played by Lohan, gets involved. When she persuades Bobby to change his plans, ditch the sure-fire money-spinning plot and replace it with a classic piece of box-office poison, Charlie resorts to desperate measures.

It's another brilliantly satirical piece from the writer, a brutal portrayal of Hollywood by one of the most popular and talented playwrights of his generation. High octane, contemporary, thrilling and fast-paced, it's rich in Mamet's famously incisive wit and genuinely mesmerising dialogue.

Lindsay Lohan is already a multi-award winning actress, but this is her stage debut. Her hit movies include Mean Girls, Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion and Emilio Estevez's Bobby. And she has wowed audiences worldwide with her roles in TV's Ugly Betty and Glee. She even starred as Elizabeth Taylor in the brilliant biopic Liz & Dick.

The play's talented director Lindsay Posner has directed more Mamet plays than anyone else, including hits with Oleanna, Sexual Perversity in Chicago and A Life in the Theatre. The fun starts at London's Playhouse Theatre from late September, billed as a yet another smash hit - thought provoking, compelling and hugely enjoyable.
