Sweeney Todd in London

Starring:

Michael Ball, Imelda Staunton, Jason Manford

Scare yourself silly with the thrilling musical Sweeney Todd

Ready to be scared? If you enjoy thrills and gore, murder, intrigue and suspense, the dark humour of Sweeney Todd’s nasty habits will be right up your street.

Sweeney Todd – The story

An original urban legend from the 1840s, this is the frightening tale of the infamous Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It’s a gory story of revenge, murder and mystery in which Benjamin Barker, also known as Sweeney Todd, returns to London after a lengthy false imprisonment, determined to win restitution and wreak revenge after his wife’s death. Pie shop owner Mrs Lovett provides an outlet for his murdering ways, selling tasty pies made from the flesh of the people he has murdered in his terrifying scarlet leather barber’s chair. But she has a secret of her own, and his dastardly plans are soon in tatters.

Based on the book by Hugh Wheeler, this show is a revival of Christopher Bond’s original play and composer Stephen Sondheim’s famous musical. It has its fair share of comedy moments amongst the horror and you’ll enjoy razor-sharp wit to accompany the blood and gore, along with a collection of disturbingly strong and gutsy songs, some of which were allegedly inspired by the Alfred Hitchcock horror movie, Psycho.

This is a genuinely frightening show and teenagers absolutely revel in it. But it isn’t about cheap thrills. Jonathan Kent’s direction lends the production real class and the music is quite simply fabulous. Jonathan Kent directs, Anthony Ward has created superb sets and costumes, Mark Henderson has lit the production to spectacularly horrid effect and Paul Groothuis’s sound design makes for a genuine aural feast.

Sweeney Todd songs

This Tony and Olivier award-winning show contains forty three superb songs to accompany one of the goriest on-stage stories of all time, including Pirelli’s Miracle Elixir, The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, My Friends, Poor Thing, No Place Like London, Kiss Me and Wait.

Probably one of the best shows I have ever seen. Acting, directing and music all first class. I have seen Sweeny Todd before but this was far far better. Any one who is a Sondheim musical fan shouldn't miss this at all. Cancel anything to get to it!!
