The Scottsboro Boys in London

Scottsboro Boys – It's 1931 and nine boys are in big trouble...

The Scottsboro Boys electrified audiences at the Young Vic in 2013 and had critics on their knees. Looking back it was only a matter of time before this epic musical, with Kander and Ebb at the helm for their final collaboration, transferred to London's glittering West End.

Fans will be delighted to know this is a real Kander and Ebb classic. The duo have taken a typically difficult and uncomfortable storyline and turned it into something that's as entertaining as it is accessible, and best of all the original true story retains its considerable power to shock, with no compromise to its integrity.

Susan Stroman directs this remarkable and tragic true tale of institutional racism, where nine young black men fell foul of Alabama's shameful race laws back in 1931, as the Great Depression bit. Needless to say the men were innocent of the two rapes they were accused of. The white women involved were lying. But it took six years to prove four of them innocent, only thanks to a determined political campaign. And the court case changed US history forever.

The show was nominated for an astonishing six Olivier Awards, including a coveted award for Best New Musical. It also won the Critics’ Circle Best Musical Award in 2013, a well-deserved accolade. And because it's the final collaboration between the legendary composing duo, from whose pens sprung Cabaret and Chicago, it's set to attract massive audiences.

The Scottsboro Boys - What's the story?

In 1931 9 black boys were hauled off a train in Alabama, falsely accused of raping two white women. They were tried in no time and convicted more or less straight away, in a huge miscarriage of justice.

Thanks to a political campaign , four of the boys were let free six years later, in 1937. They found employment straight after their release, in a Minstrel show, which delivers a nice ironic twist and inspired the staging of the show.

The end result is both enormously entertaining and sharply satirical, perfect if you like your musicals with a good dollop of spice, plenty of truth and a daring bite.

Excellent Show which delivered deep topical issues

A shocking story stunningly told

Sadly this stunning piece of work is now finished- so I cannot urge everyone to see it- cannot understand why astonishing superlative shows like this come off, when some meagre or inconsequential offerings remain.

Surprise of the year!

See https://www.londonboxoffice.co.uk/news/ for the full review, but needless to say I did not expect this musical to be so good, so polished and so slick. I expected to enjoy the evening but came out having experienced a theatre revelation - such as shame the Garrick isn't extending this run as I really think it's one of the top musicals in the West End at the moment. The subject matter is intense and perfect for children in high school education studying English, American History or Politics. The singing was wonderful, tight harmonies and smooth as silk voices. The dancing was crisp and exciting, the set was simple but innovative. An excellent overall production, go The Scottsboro Boys!!

Scottsboro Boys - Unforgettable history with fun!

If you want to watch a show where you learn some history but in an environment where it is both fun and thought provoking then this is THE show for you. The artists perform at such an enthusiastic level from the first scene that you will appreciate that you are about to have a unique experience not typically associated with musicals.

The show was well acted and drew the audience in from the very beginning. With beautiful voice performances and captivating deliveries the actors kept us intrigued. Although we might think we know how the story ends it still managed to surprise and leave you very moved. This show somehow manages to be both entertaining yet thought provoking at the same time. I enjoyed it immensely and believe it will stay with me for a long time to come. It it is what I would call a true theatre experience.

The Scottsboro Boys is brilliant from music to choreography to characterization to the splendid cast to the direction and we love it!!!!! I had seen it in New York, know Catherine Schreiber and was so happy to see it in London. My friend and I were both moved by it, laughed with it and it will be a memorable experience forever. I am listening to the CD at this very moment.

Tap your foot and think!

Thought provoking, foot tapping, exhilarating, shocking, entertaining and uncomfortable, this is the best show I have seen in a long time. The questions, the discussions, the conversations it provokes continue long after the sheer exuberance of the show ends. Everybody should see it!
