The Third Man in London
Graham Greene’s brilliant story – which was made into a landmark film and published as a novella – now comes to the stage in a new musical written by Christopher Hampton with music by George Fenton, lyrics by Don Black and directed by Trevor Nunn.
Post-war Vienna is the setting as Holly Martins arrives at the invitation of his friend and hero, Harry Lime, only to discover that Harry has been killed in a car accident. But nothing that he is told about what happened makes any sense. The tension mounts as Holly enters the world of black marketeers and military bureaucracy, culminating in a chase through the Viennese sewers, as Holly tries to discover what happened to Harry…and who is the third man?
This world premiere will keep audiences on the edge of their seats as they are immersed into the world of The Third Man.

My wife and I had way more fun than expected. The dark and moody atmosphere evoked the feeling of watching a black and white film unfold on the stage in front of us. The intimacy of the theatre room made the experience all the better. The musical performances were also great! Having not seen the original film, it was quite fun to try to guess the answer to the mystery.

The show convinced me there's a musical to be made out of THE THIRD MAN, but this isn't finished. There is a basic mistake in the introduction of the leading character. This is a show about the disillusion of a naive American optimist in the hell of postwar Europe. We have to see him arrive with optimism, believing that he and other allies can revive Europe in the postwar world. The show doesn't work if he starts off depressed and insecure. Sam Underwood is a fine performer and did what he could with the material, but without a more upbeat introduction to the character, the journey for Holly Martins is truncated. But I was fascinated to watch the choices the creative team made.

I really enjoyed the show. As well as a great ensemble cast, with charismatic leads, we had an all time great story, and a superb theatre that was really part of the show. Congratulations to all.
