Top Hat in London
Based on one of the most beloved gems of the Golden Age of Hollywood, Top Hat returns to the West End over ten years after it first premiered. Get ready to be whisked away into the splendor and glamour of 1930s London, with a love story filled with song and dance, witty banter, and chaotic antics. Cheeky, romantic, and colourful, this is the perfect musical to start off your festive season.
Why you should see Top Hat
- Irving Berlin’s brilliant score includes some of Hollywood’s most popular and recognisable songs, including 'Cheek to Cheek', 'Let’s Face the Music' and 'Puttin’ on the Ritz'.
- If you loved the classic musical comedy starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, you’ll fall in love with this glittering, glamorous stage adaptation, which is an homage to everything we adore about the Golden Age of Hollywood.
- With zany comedy, quirky characters, witty one-lingers, and a romance that oozes with chemistry and passion, Top Hat has all the ingredients of a perfect musical.
What is Top Hat about?
When Broadway star and perpetual casanova Jerry Travers arrives in London to open his new tap-dancing show, he falls in love with fiesty model Dale Tremont and vows to win her over. But Dale has mistaken him for his hapless producer Horace, who himself is trying to avoid the wrath of his fiery wife Madge, who’s secretly trying to set up Dale and Jerry. To add to the confusion, Dale’s Italian admirer Alberto is planning to spirit her off to Venice to model for him. Will true love prevail?
Based on the 1935 screwball comedy musical starring one of Hollywood’s most famous duos, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, this stage adaptation first premiered in the West End in 2013 to multiple awards and critical acclaim. Now it returns in time for the festive season, directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award-winning Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes). A talented cast brings to life the eclectic, zany, and witty characters, including Phillip Attmore (Shuffle Along, Hello, Dolly!), Amara Okereke (My Fair Lady, Les Miserables), Clive Carter (Moulin Rouge, Come From Away) and Sally Ann Triplett (Cabaret, Anything Goes). A lavish Art Deco set and gorgeous costumes paint a delightfully vintage picture of 1930s London, set to the unforgettable and beloved score by the legendary Irving Berlin.
With a love story packed with chemistry and witty banter, a plot driven by chaotic and hilarious antics, and filled with unforgettable songs and delightful dance routines, Top Hat is the perfect feel-good musical to get you in the mood for the holidays.

Top Hat top classJust go and enjoy it. Absorb yourself in the superb music, brilliant dancing and slick movement. The shifts in geographical location were well achieved. The second act particularly reminded me of the old Whitehall farces of Brian Rix.

an entertaining eveningan old favourite of mine, marred only by the (for me) over effective miking which pained my ears even in Row K of the Dress circle. Not quite as deafening as Thriller, but too many decibels for me - and i am over 70 and slightly deaf anyway.

Good Fun, Wonderful SetsThe Art Deco sets were wonderful, The costumes beautiful. The script was funny and dancing and acting really enjoyable. You will like this if you enjoy watching Strictly come Dancing and the music of the time. One of the group I went with wasn't that keen on 1st half which was mainly tap dancing but in the 2nd half the story really developed and more dancing. Many humorous bits.

A gret day outEverything about the show (performances, costumes, choreography, etc.) was excellent. The only disappointment was the seats. We would have been better off in the front of upper circle rather than the back row of the dress circle because the upper circle overhangs dress circle.

Top marks for Top HatGreat if you like nostalgia and remember the Astaire/Rogers film. Our sets were central in the Dress Circle Row E unfortunately they were immediately behind the row in front and the people there obstructed the view of the front of the stage somewhat. Tip: book rows A to D at this theatre, which are staggered in future,
