Top Hat in London
Top Hat – 1930s glamour brought to vibrant life on stage
We’re delighted to introduce Top Hat, a musical extravaganza packed with glamour and glitz, based on the famous Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie with dreamy music by Irving Berlin.
Top Hat – The story
Whether or not you’ve seen the film, you’ll fall head over heels with this luscious stage production of the timeless love story. American dancer Jerry Travers, originally played by Astaire, works in London. Practising a new dance routine late at night, he wakes Dale Tremont, originally played by Ginger Rogers. When she complains about the noise, romance blossoms and it’s love at first sight. But will they ever get together, or will misunderstandings ruin their relationship before it starts?
Feisty Dale Tremont and nimble-footed tap dancer Jerry Travers eventually end up in Venice, the most romantic city on earth, where Jerry finds he has a rival for Dale’s affections. Thankfully the butler, Bates, is there to smooth the path of true love.
Top Hat – A classic ‘feel good’ show
Top Hat the movie was a classic feel good movie. And the stage version has the same charm, with the story brought to life before your eyes set to a suite of stunning tunes by Irving Berlin. The dance routines are simply spectacular and rave reviews mean it’s looking like a smash West End hit the making.
Top Hat the musical is a wonderful feast of nostalgia and Hollywood glamour. If you’re one of the many millions of us who are hooked on Strictly Ballroom, this’ll be right up your street. The choreographer Bill Deamer, who was also involved in Love Never Dies and So You Think You Can Dance, has overseen the original 1930s dance routines to deliver an authentic and faithful representation of one of the world’s favourite old-time dance classics. As the critics say, it can’t put a foot wrong.
Top Hat songs
The Top Hat movie included just five tunes by Irving Berlin: Isn’t This A Lovely Day, Cheek To Cheek, No Strings, Piccolino and Top Hat itself, the show’s signature tune. But the stage show’s production team, led by director Matthew White and producer Kenny Wax, has also included two more fantastic period songs for the West End version: Let’s Face The Music And Dance and I’m Putting All My Eggs In One Basket.

Just go and enjoy it. Absorb yourself in the superb music, brilliant dancing and slick movement. The shifts in geographical location were well achieved. The second act particularly reminded me of the old Whitehall farces of Brian Rix.

an old favourite of mine, marred only by the (for me) over effective miking which pained my ears even in Row K of the Dress circle. Not quite as deafening as Thriller, but too many decibels for me - and i am over 70 and slightly deaf anyway.

The show was an excellent taste of glamour, elegance and lavish life style, often depicted in USA comedy\romatic films in the 1930's. Lots of tapdacing and great singing. Nostagic. The Best.

I have been twice to see the show - last time was last week as I wanted to see it before the show closed. Can't think why the show is closing - it is marvellous - the whole cast lovely but especially Gavin Lee - super dancer and singer. Hope it comes back to a London theatre soon.

The Art Deco sets were wonderful, The costumes beautiful. The script was funny and dancing and acting really enjoyable. You will like this if you enjoy watching Strictly come Dancing and the music of the time. One of the group I went with wasn't that keen on 1st half which was mainly tap dancing but in the 2nd half the story really developed and more dancing. Many humorous bits.

High hairstyles of members of the audience should be discouraged they block the view of the stage.

Everything about the show (performances, costumes, choreography, etc.) was excellent. The only disappointment was the seats. We would have been better off in the front of upper circle rather than the back row of the dress circle because the upper circle overhangs dress circle.

Great if you like nostalgia and remember the Astaire/Rogers film. Our sets were central in the Dress Circle Row E unfortunately they were immediately behind the row in front and the people there obstructed the view of the front of the stage somewhat. Tip: book rows A to D at this theatre, which are staggered in future,

Not for children under 12 I would suggests, as the ones in the audience seemed less interested in the dialogue and appeared not to have been provided with booster seats so could not see too well either! Simply stunning show all the same, my husband says he'd love to go again! A budding Fred Astaire at 70!
