Vanya in London

Andrew Scott

Andrew Scott returns to London with Vanya, a fresh new adaptation of Chekhov's masterpiece by Simon Stephens, directed by Sam Yates. Designed by Rosanna Vize, the production opens at the Duke of York's Theatre on 21st September courtesy of Wessex Grove, Gavin Kalin Productions and Kater Gordon.

The brilliant Andrew Scott will play every role in this definitive new version of the beloved Chekhov play. As he says, "Heartbreaking, hilarious, sexy, devastating- the genius and extraordinary humanity of Mr Chekhov just knocks me out. It's a genuine honour and a singular challenge to bring this giant of a play to life in the West End in this new way and I'm so excited to be doing it alongside such brilliant, playful and talented people."

The show reunites Scott and Stephens, who collaborated to perfection for productions of Sea Wall and Birdland. Scott and Yates have previously worked together on the short film, The Hope Rooms. The producers Benjamin Lowy and Emily Vaughan-Barratt, both from Wessex Grove, have also worked with Scott on Sea Wall and Hamlet.

Simon Stephens is thrilled. In his words, "Anton Chekhov is my favourite writer. Andrew Scott is as good an actor as there is in the world. Sam Yates is an artist of the highest order. To work with these people in the heart of the West End; to be fearlessly creative and exploratory there; to have only the impulse to make art is all utterly thrilling. This is work that reminds me again and again that theatre is our greatest art form. The most alive. The funniest. The sexiest. The most heartbreaking. The most human."

What's the plot of Vanya?

Vanya theatre tickets let you experience a brilliant play by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, first published in 1898 and produced in 1899 by the Moscow Art Theatre. The play concerns the visit of an elderly professor and his glamorous, much younger second wife Yelena to the rural estate that supports their city lifestyle. Vanya is horribly disappointed to realise he has wasted his life managing the country estate and business affairs of his former brother-in-law, who as it turns out will never amount to anything more than a sub-standard pedantic academic.

A big leap for one actor plays

This is a really astonishing theatrical experience and represents a major technical innovation in the theatre for plays involving just one actor. It's far more ambitious that say Jodie Comer in "Prima Facie" which as most critics agreed was also exceptionally good. Andrew Scott and his team really do pull off the ability to embody all of the characters and their interactions without any other actors other than Andrew. It's still quite a big departure from the source material of "Uncle Vanya" and is modernised and anglicised to some extent but most of the major events in the play are still recognisable. The play is also very funny and moving, with a lot of the humour deriving from the format and there is a certain amount of "nod nod wink wink" interaction with the audience. The only criticisms is not all of the lines were audible and also I felt that the ending was too drawn out and it is often better to let Chekhov's themes emerge from the play than state them explicitly.

So clever!

One of the best theatre productions you will ever see. Andrew Scott played a blinder. He used his voice and his body so cleverly to convey the characters. I haven’t commented on the music as I didn’t really notice it.
