Tom Murphy's powerful, harrowing play follows a family of Irish immigrants from County Mayo who settle in Coventry in the 1960s. The Carney family is a brawling, hard-drinking, and violent criminal gang led by domineering patriarch Dada. Eldest son Michael, whose soft-spoken pacifism is seen as weakness by his family, attempts to escape the cycle of violence by fleeing to England and marrying an English woman. But his peaceful life shatters when his father and brothers follow him to Coventry. Michael desperately tries to save his younger brother Des from the family's culture of brutality, but finds that the toxic familial and tribal bonds they grew up with are as inescapable as they are destructive.
Caitríona McLaughlin (The Playboy of the Western World) returns to the National Theatre in a co-production with Ireland's Abbey Theatre to direct Tom Murphy's Irish masterpiece, which stars Paul Mescal (Gladiator, Hamnet, Normal People) as Michael Carney. A Whistle in the Dark first premiered in 1961 in London, after being rejected by the Abbey Theatre in Dublin - where it will now go on to play following its National Theatre run. It's a powerful, thoughtful exploration of the Irish immigrant experience, and an unflinching look at generational trauma, family loyalty, and tribal violence.
Don't miss the return of an Irish classic that speaks just as boldly to us as when it was written.
