East Is East in London

East is East – A modern classic

Jane Horrocks takes the stage for this long-awaited revival of a play that first thrilled, amused and challenged audiences way back in 1997. It was made into a highly successful and well-loved film two years later in 1999, starring the wonderful Om Puri and Linda Bassett, and is the second in a season of plays overseen by director Jamie Lloyd at the Trafalgar Studios, part of the Trafalgar Transformed initiative. The play runs from October 2014 and is directed by Sam Yates, who was responsible for The El Train.

Jane Horrocks, who plays Ella, was last on stage for the acclaimed Annie Get Your Gun, which took the Young Vic by storm. But she's also hot on theatregoers' hit list because of her successes in The Young Vic's The Good Soul of Szechuan, The Royal Court theatre's production of Aunt Dan and Lemon and Absurd Person Singular. She's also well know on TV, with Trollied, Absolutely Fabulous and Sunshine on Leith under her belt. But she's probably best known for her role in the film and stage version of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, which raised the rafters night after night at the National and Aldwych Theatres as well as netting her a well-deserved Golden Globe award nomination.

The playwright Ayub Khan Din is set to bring extra flavour and flair to the latest revival of his hugely popular play, which was originally written as his own semi-autobiographical take on British-Asian life in the notoriously tough 1970s. It isn't the playwright's first appearance on stage, either. Ayub Khan Din is a fine actor as well as a writer, and was last seen on stage in 2013 performing in the off-Broadway hit Bunty Berman Presents.

East is East - The story

East is East explores the life of the Pakistani chip-shop owner George Khan, a man who is absolutely determined to bring his kids up in the traditional, strict Muslim way. But it's the 1970s, the family lives in Salford, George's wife is English and his children are not going to make his ambitions easy to achieve... quite the opposite! As tensions run high their mum Ella is caught in the crossfire, victim of divided loyalties and hard-pushed to keep the peace.

Weak male lead

The first half was slow and quite boring, however, the second half was much better. The male lead is not a strong actor and he was quite monotone. Jane Horrocks made the show along with the youngest son. I felt the second half captured what it must've been like living in the Northern 1960's and growing up in a multi-racial family and the difficulties they faced.

What a wonderful evening

Simply amazing - everything was planned really well. The stage, heating, lighting - what a fabulous theatre - felt like a private viewing. Lovely bar downstairs for the interval. The actors - how very, very talented. The store line was extremely good. The passion, seriousness, laughter - oh such laughter. We had such a wonderful evening. Thank you.

Still Thought Provoking

Beneath the comedy are the trials and tribulations of mixed marriage. It really does make one think more sensitively about the consequences. I know mixed race friends from black and white who have faced the trauma of not being accepted by either ethnicity. All the cast were excellent and coming from Salford I thought paying £70 a ticket was a bit steep. However the experience was worth every penny.
