Hadestown description

Take a helping of Anais Mitchell, one of the USA's best loved folk musicians and singer-songwriters. Add a dollop of National Theatre, a magnificent modernist venue on the banks of the mighty River Thames. Combine them and you get one of the most exciting theatrical experiences to hit the capital for some time. Welcome to Hadestown, a magnificent, moody re-imagining of the ancient Greek myth.

This, the 2016 stage musical adaptation Mitchell's 2010 folk opera concept album by the same name enjoyed its premiere off-Broadway in the New York Theatre Workshop, developed for the stage by the talented Rachel Chavkin, who also directs. It enjoyed record-breaking seasons in New York and at the Edmonton Citadel Theatre in Canada, and after this run at the National it'll be heading over the Atlantic for an eagerly awaited Broadway season.

Hadestown weaves a fresh version of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Orpheus journeys to the underworld to rescue his wife Eurydice in a musical that blends modern American folk music with lovely old New Orleans jazz. The music, lyrics and book are all by Anaïs Mitchell, developed in collaboration with Rachel Chavkin, and Vogue magazine says it'll become “your next musical theatre obsession.”

What's the story? It's summertime, and songwriter Orpheus and his muse Eurydice are falling truly, madly and deeply in love. But winter is on the way and love alone won't keep the couple warm. When Eurydice is lured to the sinister industrial conurbation of Hadestown in search of riches, Orpheus journeys deep into the underworld to save her.

The show is produced in association with Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy, and was co-conceived by Ben t Matchstick, the quirky cardboard artist, performer, master of ceremonies, writer, educator, theatre director and puppeteer. The New York Times calls the resulting musical “Inventive. Beguiling. Luminous. Spellbinding.” Variety magazine calls it “a stunning production” and Time Out NY calls it “something special”.

The Set Designer is Rachel Hauck and the Costume Designer Michael Krass. Lighting Design comes from Bradley King and Sound Design by Nevin Steinberg. The Choreographer is David Neumann and the Musical Director Liam Robinson. The Arrangements and Orchestrations come from Michael Chorney and Additional / Co-Arrangements and Orchestrations from Todd Sickafoose. The result is an awe-inspiring production you won't forget in a hurry.
