This 1887 play by the great Russian playwright Anton Chekhov follows Nikolai Ivanov, a government official who's lost his zest for life. Faced with debts and his wife's explained illness, he throws himself into the decadent world of parties in a desperate search for salvation. Meanwhile he grapples with the guilt of his wife Anna's sacrifice, leaving her conservative parents behind to marry him, and his inability to give her the devotion she deserves. Seeking an escape from humdrum and misery, Nikolai finds himself caught in a torrid love affair with a younger woman, which threatens to undo everything in his life.

Simon Stone (The Lady from the Sea, Yerma, Phaedra) brings Chekhov's keenly observant and scathingly witty comic drama to life, relocated to the modern age by the same creative team behind The Lady from the Sea. Hollywood star Chris Pine (Star Trek) stars in the role of Nikolai in his London stage debut. Pine told the Guardian, ‘I'm excited to bring this complex character and story to life and to take part in Simon's singular creative process.' Stone said, ‘Ivanov is the most knotty of his male characters, a challenge and a gift' and described the play as ‘existence writ messily and lovingly, an ode to imperfection.'
