Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse

The Kit Kat Club occupies the Playhouse Theatre on Northumberland Avenue, London WC2N 5DE, down by the river end of the street. Embankment is a minute away — Bakerloo, Circle, District and Northern lines — and Charing Cross, for the Bakerloo and Northern as well as the trains, three to five. Do check which entrance your ticket specifies, as the club uses more than the main door.

Earlier than you would for an ordinary theatre. Your ticket may carry its own arrival time, and it is worth honouring: the club opens well before the show and the prologue performances in the bars are part of the evening rather than a warm-up to it. Thirty minutes is the minimum; the more time you allow, the more of the club you actually see.

Nothing is required, but this is the one London venue where a good many people dress for the occasion — Weimar-inspired, black tie, or simply something they would not wear anywhere else. Come in jeans if you prefer and you will be in plenty of company. The theatre asks only that outfits stay comfortable enough to sit in and considerate of the people beside you.

Please put the camera away once the show begins — no photography or filming while it runs. Before and after, and during the bows, take all the pictures you like; the club's dressed interiors and the in-the-round staging are unlike anything else in the West End, and the bars before the show are the best-looking part of the evening for a photograph.

A small, carefully chosen range is sold at the club's bars rather than from a kiosk, which suits the setting. The same items can be ordered from the production's official website if you would rather not carry anything through the evening, or if what you want has gone by the interval.

Yes. It is downstairs in the Red Bar, beside the toilets and close to the staircase, and there is a charge for each item. Large luggage is best left elsewhere: the club's spaces are intimate and there is nowhere sensible to put a suitcase once you are inside.
