Kyoto in London

Following on from its critically acclaimed run at The RSC, Kyoto arrives in London’s West End for a limited engagement at @sohoplace starting January 2025. Written by Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson; the fast-paced, politically charged thriller will place audiences at the heart of the historic 1997 Kyoto climate summit.

About Kyoto

Kyoto centres on the high-stakes negotiations leading up to the historic 1997 UN climate conference, where world leaders gathered to create a landmark agreement to combat global warming. The play captures the intense pressure, political manoeuvring, and moral dilemmas faced by key diplomats as they wrestle with competing national interests. As the clock ticks down, tensions rise, highlighting the complexity of international diplomacy and the urgency of addressing climate change. Through its portrayal of these pivotal moments, Kyoto sheds light on the challenges and triumphs that shaped the future of global environmental policy.

Written by Good Chance co-founders Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson (The Jungle, Walk with Little Amal), Kyoto reunites them with award-winning directors Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin, known for their work on Stranger Things: The First Shadow. After a critically acclaimed run at the RSC, the production heads to the West End, where it was hailed as "Sheer theatrical magic!" (WhatsOnStage) and "Rich and vital" (The I).

Kyoto cast and creatives

Tony Award-nominated actor Stephen Kunken (The Handmaid's Tale) will reprise his role as American oil lobbyist and master strategist, Don Pearlman, following on from his RSC debut earlier this year. Jenna Augen, Olivia Barrowclough, Jorge Bosch, Nancy Crane, Andrea Gatchalian, Togo Igawa, Kwong Loke, Dale Rapley, Raad Rawi and Ferdy Roberts will also reprise their roles in the West End production next year.

The full creative team for Kyoto comprises of Set Designer Miriam Buether, Costume Designer Natalie Pryce, Lighting Designer Aideen Malone, Sound Designer Christopher Reid, Video Designer Akhila Krishnan, Composer Paul Englishby, Dramaturg Gemma Stockwood and Casting Director Julia Horan CDG.

Heading to the West End early next year for a limited run, Kyoto will offer audiences a gripping, behind-the-scenes look at diplomacy in action.

A cartoonish look at the climate change politics

Although somewhat accurate historically, the play slid into not very subtle shouting matches. Left at intermission.

Fabulous production in an amazing new theatre

To be honest, I thought the play could be boring, but it was done so well and so cleverly that I didn’t mind that I didn’t get all the references etc. I enjoyed the whole production and my son absolutely loved it . We thought the theatre itself was brilliant.

Powerful, informative and entertaining.

Great show with an original perspective on the COP process. Presenting the story primarily from the point of view of a lobbyist who was trying to block the process, makes the message even stronger as no one in the audience can have been left in any doubt about the importance of the process.
