Rising from obscure Whip to Prime Minister in record time, John Major took over from Margaret Thatcher in 1990 after winning the Tory leadership election during a pivotal moment for the UK as it was redefining its relationship to Europe. Major would go on to bring an entirely new leadership style to running the government. The play explores what true leadership looks like during times of change - a question that feels just as urgent to modern-day Britain as it did in the nineties.
This new political drama is the latest masterpiece by three-time Olivier Award winner James Graham (Punch, Dear England, The Standard of Living), who is one of Britain's most prolific and insightful dramatists, known for his ability to blend history, economics, and politics with powerful storytelling. It will reunite Graham with director Jeremy Herrin following their acclaimed production of parliamentary drama This House. Major is one of eight world premieres that will feature in the National Theatre's new season, which focuses on political upheaval and global conflict.
Don't miss this new political drama from a playwright who's mastered the art of bringing history to life onstage in fresh and exciting ways.
