In the seedy underbelly of 18th century Paris, money is king and everything has a price, even love. In this hotbed of hedonism and desire, Manon finds herself torn when she falls in love with the steadfast and devoted student Des Grieux, who promises her an honourable life, but not one filled with wealth and luxury. On the other side, she is lured by the promise of riches and the temptations of Parisian high society, but are those worth sacrificing her love for?
Kenneth MacMillan’s devastating and powerful 1974 ballet comes to life onstage, set to Jules Massenet’s score and featuring Nicholas Georgiadis’s dazzling designs. Witness the heroine Manon’s heartbreaking inner turmoil and struggle for survival as she chooses between love and luxury. MacMillan’s work has enchanted and awed audiences with its nuanced understanding of human psychology, and nowhere more so than in this clever adaptation of Abbé Prévost’s 1731 story with its stark descriptions of the lowlifes that inhabit the Parisian demimonde. Decadence and decay come together with a fierce and complex heroine in this timeless tale of the temptations of wealth.
