Marie and Rosetta in London
Starring:
Beverley Knight
Following a wildly successful tour this summer, Marie & Rosetta will arrive in London to play at the Soho Place Theatre in 2026. Multi-award-winning singer and actor Beverly Knight (Memphis, The Drifters' Girl, Sylvia, Sister Act) and rising star Ntombizodwa Ndlovu (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Space Between Us, Mixtape) star as Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight in this joyful celebration of gospel and blues music based on a powerful true story.
Why you should see Marie & Rosetta
- Not many people know about Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her role in revolutionising music through a mix of rock 'n' roll and gospel singing. Marie & Rosetta honours and celebrates her often underlooked place in musical history.
- Music lovers will be dazzled by this extraordinary performance of blues, gospel, and rock 'n' roll by two incredible vocal talents.
- Catch the award-winning musical and acting talent Beverly Knight take on the role of the formidable Rosetta, while rising star Ntombizodwa Ndlovu makes her West End debut as blossoming Marie.
What is Marie & Rosetta about?
Mississippi, 1946: Sister Rosetta Tharpe has been shunned by church folk. Her crime? Bringing a taste of rhythm and blues to gospel music and performing in nightclubs with her electric guitar. Saintly young singer Marie Knight persuades her to perform together on a tour of the segregated southern states. In return, Rosetta is determined to introduce a bit of swing into Marie's traditional gospel style. Together, the two women will take the South by storm.
George Brant's (Grounded, The Land of Oz) roof-raising, uplifting musical play tells the true story of the godmother of rock 'n' roll, Rosetta Tharpe, and her protege Marie Knight, in a rollicking celebration of gospel and blues music. Directed by Monique Touko (The Boy at the Back of the Class, School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play), it first opened at the Rose Theatre to critical acclaim before going on tour. Now it returns to London to dazzle, enchant, and delight audiences at the Soho Place Theatre. For a seven-week limited run, you can step back into 1940s Mississipi and experience what producer Jonathan Church describes as 'joyous, celebratory quality of a musical alongside the depth of characterisation and detail of a great play'.
If you love music and are passionate about musical history, you won't want to miss this electrifying story of two unforgettable women making their mark in the world of music.
