Martin Guerre in London
Last chance to see! Martin Guerre closes at the Old Vic Theatre on Saturday, 31 October 2026. Only a few days remain – book now before the final curtain falls.
Martin Guerre is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, creators of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. Based on the real-life historical case of imposture, it follows a young peasant couple in 16th century rural France. Years after Betrande's husband Martin abandoned her and left their village, a man arrives at their home, claiming to be the returned Martin. He's far kinder and more loving than the husband Bertrande remembers, but their happiness is cut short when the villagers accuse 'Martin' of being an imposter.
The story of Martin Guerre has been retold multiple times, and even adapted into a film starring Sean Bean. The musical adaptation premiered in 1996 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London, later undergoing several major revisions. Now a new revival is coming to the Old Vic, directed by Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus. This classic show has been radically reworked, with new lyrics, new folk-inflected orchestrations and an immersive in-the-round staging. Fall in love with the timeless story based on a historical mystery, filled with unforgettable characters, twists and turns, and a dazzling score.
Book now and experience yet another thrilling musical from the minds behind the beloved Les Mis.

A nice surpriseAll leads had amazing voices! I liked that it was quite different to usual shows. Not having a proper stage was interesting and worked.

A powerful eveningIf you like your theatre with plenty of grit, this is a very good evening. I loved the intimate setting in the round. Some stellar singing. The story still has some weak spots but it’s still well worth seeing.

Just about okayDelighted when I saw the return of this show, a favourite of mine many years ago. This updated version is lacking in character and plot....it feels rushed. Great performances from some of the cast.

Too different from the originalVery slow start to the play. Endless actors putting sun screen on their faces for what seemed like an eternity. Considering the play is set in France - everyone inexplicably spoke with Yorkshire accents. Very few of the original songs and none of the new ones were memorable. A shame.
