Mother Courage and Her Children Tickets

First performed in 1941, Mother Courage and Her Children is typically considered Bertolt Brecht's greatest work. An epic drama set during the Thirty Years War in the 17th century, it follows the steely, determined Mother Courage, who will do whatever it takes in order to survive and keep her children alive. She runs a commissary business, profiting off both sides of the war, even if that means selling what's left her of humanity. But as the war claims them one by one, she's confronted with the heartbreaking reality that no one can profit from war without suffering its terrible costs.

Translated by Anna Jordan (Succession, Yen, Lost Atoms) and directed by Globe Associate Artist Elle While (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet), this harrowing, darkly hedonistic play explores the urgent realities of war, survival, capitalism, and complicity, in a modern staging of a classic protest piece which feels just as resonant today. Globe Artistic Director Michelle Terry (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, Hamlet) stars as one of the most complex and formidable female characters in theatre, in this heartbreaking story about the horrors of war and social injustice, filled with biting humour and live music.
