About An Ideal Husband

In this witty, clever comedy by Oscar Wilde, government minister Sir Robert Chiltern has everything a man of high society could ask for: big house, expensive clothes, immaculate reputation, loving wife. But everything flips upside down when the devious Mrs Cheveley arrives, with secrets to spill and a thirst for drama. Her revelations threaten to destroy Robert's good name and upend everything he's worked for. How far will he go to protect everything he holds dear?

An Ideal Husband is one of Wilde's most popular plays: packed with scandal, political corruption, and blackmail, and told through Wilde's trademark wit and with a scathing commentary on high society. This new production will relocate the play to present-day London. It marks 100 years since the play was last staged at the Lyric Hammersmith, where it appeared in 1926.

The cast

The cast includes Emmanuel Akwafo as Mason and Phipps, Jeff Alexander as the Earl of Caversham, Nimmy March as Lady Basildon, Suzette Llewellyn as Lady Markby, Tamara Lawrance as Lady Chiltern, Tiwa Lade as Mabel Chiltern, Chiké Okonkwo as Lord Chiltern, Aurora Perrineau as Mrs Cheveley, Sule Thelwell as Vicomte de Nanjac and Jamael Westman as Lord Goring. Trevor Nelson will also contribute voice work to the production.

The creative team

The production will be directed by Nicholai La Barrie. The creative team includes set and costume designer Rajha Shakiry, lighting designer Zeynep Kepekli, sound designer Holly Khan, movement director Alexzandra Sarmiento and casting director Heather Basten. The assistant director is Gráinne Flynn, with Mariama Bojang as associate costume designer.

The production will run in London from 7 May to 6 June 2026, with a press night scheduled for 13 May, before transferring to Bristol Old Vic from 10 to 20 June.
