A new production of Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children is coming to the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre this September, marking the play's 10th anniversary.

Artistic Director Rachel O’Riordan will direct this revival, with Olivier Award-nominated Dame Meera Syal (A Tupperware of Ashes, Noises Off) as Hazel. Syal will be returning to the Lyric stage for the first time since Noises Off in 2019. The creative team includes Set & Costume Design by Gary McCann, Lighting Design by Anna Watson and Sound Design by Holly Khan. Full cast and creatives will be announced soon.
The Children follows Hazel and Robin, living in the aftermath of a catastrophe, on the edge of a radiation exclusion zone. Hazel practices yoga and Robin brews parsnip wine as they try to cling to a semblance of normalcy. But all that changes when their old friend Rose knocks on their door, bringing old memories, buried secrets, and a proposition that tests their loyalty and forces them to confront the limits of their debt to the next generation. This fiercely clever and timely play explores themes of inter-generational accountability, personal morality, and the environmental crisis have only become more relevant in the modern age.
Syal said, "I’m thrilled to be back at the Lyric Hammersmith and working with Rachel O'Riordan on Lucy Kirkwood’s brilliant, timely play.”
The Children will open at the Lyric Hammersmith on 2 September and run until 3 October 2026.
