The production will run at the National's Olivier Theatre from 5 November 2027. It will be co-directed by Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell, and the original choreography will be reproduced and adapted by performer and choreographer Julio Monge, who previously worked on the choreography for Steven Spielberg's 2021 film adaptation.
Joining them in the creative team will be set designer Miriam Buether, costume designer Nicky Gillibrand, music director Nicholas Skilbeck, fight director Sam Lyon–Behan, intimacy director Ingrid Mackinnon, with casting by Bryony Jarvis-Taylor and Naomi Downham.
Conceived by Jerome Robbins and inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the musical is set in a multiracial blue-collar neighbourhood in Manhattan's Upper West Side in the 1950s. Set against the bloody rivalry between two street gangs, the Puerto Rican Sharks and the white Jets, it follows the love story between Tony and Maria, who hail from different sides of the gang war. It features a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
This will be the first major London revival since 1998. Indhu Rubasingham, Director and Co-Chief Executive of the National Theatre, expressed her excitement for the revival, saying, "It's one of the most iconic musicals of all time and to have Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell at the helm of this large-scale theatrical feat and, using Jerome Robbins' original choreography, is thrilling."
West Side Story will run at the National Theatre from 5 November 2027 to 12 February 2028, with a press night set for 25 November.
