What is Redcliffe about?

Set against the backdrop of 18th century England, Redcliffe is the story of William Critchard and Richard Arnold. In Redcliffe, Bristol, William, a man from humble beginnings, meets Richard, a sailor passing through the town, and the two fall passionately in love. But as suspicions about their relationship grow and society's prejudices threaten to tear them apart, they must decide how much they're willing to risk for the chance to live and love freely.

Jordan Luke Gage's (Bonnie & Clyde, Heathers, &Juliet) award-winning musical is based on the tragic true story of two men who were executed for being gay in the 18th century. After playing a sell-out season at the Southwark Playhouse Borough in summer 2026, this heartbreaking story of forbidden love and persecution is coming to the West End in 2027, with Gage reprising his critically acclaimed role as William. Praised as "a masterpiece of a musical" (WhatsOnStage) and "charming, funny and devastating" (the Guardian), Redcliffe is a beautiful and moving queer love story which offers a harrowing look at prejudice and persecution.
