Award-winning actress Sandra Oh, best known for starring in programmes like Grey's Anatomy and Killing Eve, will star in a new adaptation of The Misanthrope at the National Theatre this summer. She will be joined by Paul Chahidi (The Night Manager) and Abigail Cruttenden (A Man For All Seasons), with further casting to be announced.

This striking new version of Molière’s dark comedy will be adapted by Martin Crimp (Cyrano de Bergerac) and directed by the National’s artistic director, Indhu Rubasingham (The Father and the Assassin).
The Misanthrope examines private relationships and the public debate through a modern lens. In this production, the central character Alceste is reimagined as a novelist named Alice, who despises the hollow contemporary mantras of kindness and respect. As she grows bolder in speaking out, colleagues begin to avoid her, and her personal relationships unravel.
The creative team for the production includes Set and Costume Designer Robert Jones, Lighting Designer Tim Lutkin, Casting Directors Alastair Coomer CDG and Martin Poile CDG, Voice Coach Jeannette Nelson, Associate Director Gitika Buttoo, and Associate Set and Costume Designer Ethan Cheek.
The Misanthrope will play at the Lyttelton Theatre from 16 June to 1 August 2026.
