Nye in London
Nye, by Tim Price, reveals one man’s dream of the NHS in a production that has been described as a ‘sure fire hit’. Michael Sheen stars as Welsh politician Nye Bevan in a performance the critics say is ‘electrifying’, ‘perfect’, ‘tremendous’, and ‘burns with passion’.
Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan was a brilliant Labour Party politician with extraordinary influence - yet he was never Prime Minister. Famed for campaigning for coal miners and leading the way in creating the NHS in 1948, he was a powerful political and social influence.
All About Nye
About to die in hospital, Nye’s deepest memories take him on a mind-boggling semi-drugged journey through his life, from childhood to mining deep underground, through his time in Parliament to his fierce battles with Tory rival Churchill. No wonder this production has earned a reputation as an ‘epic Welsh fantasia’.
Michael Sheen (Under Milk Wood, Faith Healer, Hamlet, Amadeus) has aced numerous TV and movie roles as well as having excellent stage credits. He reprises his role as Nye Bevan in a bold, brave affirmation of our NHS, given four stars by The Telegraph and The Times.
Written by Tim Price (Teh Internet is Serious Business) and directed by Rufus Norris (Small Island), this is a brilliant celebration of the life and legacy of the politician who helped create the country’s welfare state. It returns to the Olivier Theatre after a sell-out run in a co-production with Wales Millennium Centre.
The set design is by Vicki Mortime and the costume design by Kinnetia Isidore. Lighting design is by Paule Constable, co-choreography by Steven Hoggett and Jess Willams, and composition by Will Stuart. The sound design is by Donato Wharton, projection design by Jon Driscoll, company voice work Cathleen McCarron and Tamsin Newlands, and the staff director is Francesca Goodridge. The associate set designer is Matt Hellyer, dialect coach Patricia Logue and casting by Alastair Coomer CDG and Chloe Blake.

Review: NYE at National Theatre (Olivier)
by Stuart King | Tuesday, July 15 2025, 09:50
Playwright Tim Price’s homage to the life and challenges faced by the Welsh giant of 20th Century politics Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan, returns to the National Theatre after last year’s initial run. Michael Sheen once again assumes the central role as the man who fought bureaucrats, Churchill, the BMA and members of his own Labour Party, to create the National Health Service.
