Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends in London

Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends – “a glorious all-star memorial service”

Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends is on at the Gielgud Theatre from 16th September 2023 to 6th January 2024. The original one-night performance in May 2022 sold out more or less instantly, leaving thousands of fans disappointed. Now it’s back for a longer run, delighting lovers of the legendary Sondheim, who died in late 2021 during the show’s development. Grab tickets while you can for this extraordinary event.

The show celebrates the life and work of Sondheim, winning Best Theatre Event at the 2023 WhatsOnStage Awards. This is one of the most widely discussed theatrical events of the year with a glittering cast to match.

The cast comprises Haydn Gwynne, Damian Humbley, Bradley Jaden, Gavin Lee and Jason Pennycooke, along with the Broadway Legends Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga. You’ll see Christine Allado, Janie Dee, Bonnie Langford, Joanna Riding, Jeremy Secomb, Jac Yarrow, Marley Fenton and Beatrice Penny-Touré on stage in a large company that also includes Harry Apps, Bella Brown and Monique Young.

The cast alone is the best the West End and Broadway can deliver, and the entire package is both devised and produced by Cameron Mackintosh himself, another West End legend. This really is a Great Big Broadway Show, brought to crackling life by the Sondheim Orchestra.

What's the plot of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends?

The idea for Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends surfaced during the covid years. Lockdown saw Sondheim suggest a follow-up to the pair’s revue productions Side by Side by Sondheim and Putting It Together. Sadly Sondheim died before completing the task in November 2021, aged 91.

A one-night performance took place in May 2022 at the Sondheim Theatre, staged by Matthew Bourne and Maria Friedman and accompanied by a 26 piece orchestra conducted by Alfonso Casado Trigo. The line-up was awesome, and the show was shown simultaneously on a live screen at the Prince Edward Theatre. Later, it was broadcast on BBC Two.

Theatre tickets for Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends deliver you to an event showcasing a vast theatre talent whose skill and dedication touched every aspect of the industry. This is a glorious memorial service where every tune from the songs showcased is a eulogy.

An enjoyable evening for Sondheim fans

The show was a medley of Sondheim songs only appreciated by those familiar with Sondheim shows. More of his popular, recognizable tunes should have been sung. ie. I am what I am Send in the Clowns

A complete joy for the ears and heart

Galloping through Sondheim's classics, this is a dream cast. Particular stand outs are Lea Salonga (no surprises there! She is musical royalty) and Bradley Jaden (the sultriest wolf, you'll ever hear) It was an utter delight and an unforgettable evening.

One of the best musicals I've seen in all my theatre experiences

It was a lovely memorial, tribute and love letter to Stephen Sondheim...from his peers...and all the songs were his and performed by THE BEST company. It was a delight from beginning to end...

A musical experience not to be missed

A fabulous night of Sondheim music sung by amazing singers, their voices were powerful and made a few people sound like a full choir. They had humour, excellent interpretation of the songs and a tribute to Sondheim. Our seats were very good, near the back of the stalls, any part of the stage obscured by the dress circle overhang was compensated by the TV screens at the side of our seats. Would really recommend.

A must see for anyone who appreciates Sondheim

One of the best shows I have ever seen All of the performances were incredible whether as solos or ensembles. Orchestra were wonderful So many amazing performances from a stellar cast we found it difficult to choose a favourite. It definitely deserved the 5 star reviews given by the critics. My hands are still numb from clapping! A wonderful tribute to Stephen Sondheim

This show was unbelievable. At the end, I wanted to stay in my seat for the next show. I was almost tempted to hide in the building. Such wonderful comic timing from everyone. No one disappointed. Bernadette Peters was just…Wow! Grab a ticket if you can.
