Once The Musical, the proud winner of 8 Tony awards!

John Tiffany’s sparkling production of Once has netted an impressive eight Tony awards including Best New Musical. After a sell-out run at Dublin’s gaiety Theatre, it’s on the West End stage from spring 2013. The production also won an award for Best Musical by the New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critic Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards, so it has impeccable critical credentials.

Once - The story

Once is a delightful celebration of love, friendship and music. When an Irish busker and a young Czech mother with a shared passion for music meet, sparks fly as they explore their shared obsession through a series of stunning tunes. The songs they write create an unexpectedly deep connection and a tender romance is born…

A natural extension of the marvellous book and film

The popular and respected award winning Irish playwright and screenwriter Enda Walsh wrote the musical based on the motion picture, which was in turn written and directed by John Carney. As you can imagine, the stage version is equally enthralling.

Produced by Barbara Broccoli, John N. Hart Junior, Patrick Milling Smith, Frederick Zollo, Brian Carmody, Michael G. Wilson, Orin Wolf and Michael Rose Limited, it has been created in association with the clever people at the New York Theatre Workshop. What a treat!

Academy award winning music available online

The music and lyrics, by Glen Hansard (who wrote the score for The Commitments) and Markéta Irglová, won a coveted Academy Award. If you fall head over heels with it, you’re in luck – you can buy the original cast recording of the show via Masterwords Broadway, a label of Sony Masterworks, here: www.MasterworksBroadway.com

The scenes and costume designs are by Bob Crowley, lighting by Natasha Katz, sound by Clive Goodwin, musical supervision and orchestrations by Martin Lowe and movement by Steven Hoggett.

Go and see it, if you can.

Ronan Keating made the Show worth seeing it.

Friends enjoy trip to see Ronan Keating in Once

Very different type of show, clever staging, all cast excellent but Ronans voice made my heart sing. My friend and I loved the theatre, so ornate. Only downside was hearing the rumble of the underground, really didn't expect that.

London Box Office customer

Average show

I come from N.I. and I found the acting very hard to understand, the singing was very good.

London Box Office customer

superb musical desrves 5 star rating.

Absolutely loved the show only downside limited leg room and a mouse ran down the stairs!!

London Box Office customer

worst performance ever seen

sound equipment let this show down badley, we were sat in the royal circle and were unable to hear the performers which made it difficult to follow the story line, badley produced alround, very little in the way of acting. I am a great fan of Ronan Keating but was very disappointed with this show

Addicted

The first time I saw this show I had stall tickets this time I had next floor up these were better than the first as you saw more especially the scene looking down at Dublin. The actors were so versatile I loved everything. A special treat was Ronan who was fantastic My advice book now and don't miss out before it closes.

once

Not so Cinderella story

This is a show about all those Cinderellas who never get to go to the ball, and the most moving moment comes in the recording studio when they each reveal the hidden hinterland of their emotional and daily lives in a sequence that is like a low-key version of A Chorus Line. The best scene is notably where Guy and Girl argue their case with a bank manager for a loan, during which the audience simultaneously glimpse the frustrations of other everyday lives going nowhere through choreography. In many ways this is a lovely show, made all the better by the fact that it doesn’t follow either the traditional love story or the failure-to-fame story formula - on the contrary, it is full of ambiguities.

Jam session

Access to the bar on stage was great and the 'Jam session' prior to the start of the show was well worth the seat money on its own

London Box Office customer

Would see it more than Once

Ronan Keeting's voice was amazing definitely more than a pop star.

London Box Office customer

Heartfelt story

The show was great, characters pulled you into the story, some characters made you laugh others made you believe their story.A great story.Very glad i went to see this show.

London Box Office customer

'Once' in this case is not enough.

Once is a great musical combining Irish and Czech styles in an Irish bar. The bar is so realistic that you can go on stage before the start of the show, and during the interval to order your drinks. Members of the cast also play on the stage while you are there drinking. Just like the real thing!

London Box Office customer

Great songs and great singers

London Box Office customer

Fantastic !!!

I was not sure how the film would transfer to stage - but it was done perfectly and our party of four were all very impressed - the cast were all talented musicians & actors. Would recommend this ....

London Box Office customer

best

Once was the best show ever. well done to you all.

London Box Office customer

Thoroughly enjoyable

This is an excellent production! Ronan Keating, playing the lead, was even better than expected. Also, with regards to the theatre itself, the seats in the back row of the upper circle had a perfectly good view with no restrictions, which made for great value.

London Box Office customer

Amazing :-)

It was billed as a musical but I would class it more of a play, which doesn't mean it was any less good but was expecting all the pomp and ceremony of a "musical" like Charlie or Wicked which it clearly wasn't. However if you like Ronan Keating you'll love the music and the whole show.

London Box Office customer

Thoroughly enjoyable

London Box Office customer

Once

Excellent Show, brilliantly set, clever setting, superb songs. The main two characters were brilliant. You need to see Once, Twice.... at least. Arrive early so you can join in on stage before the show starts. What a shame i cant buy the current show songs on CD, relying on the American version

London Box Office customer

Romantic tale in Irish

We found it was very hard to here being up in dress circle...I know it was Irish but still found it hard...but got the story

Such a wonderful show

It's a wonderful show I will definitely recommend it to all my friends

London Box Office customer

Go in early to enjoy the music before the show starts.

London Box Office customer

Brilliant

Story was moving, it was fantastic being able to go on stage before the start of the show, to get a drink at the at the bar and listen to the cast sing. Ronan Keating played the lead role very well. Really recommend this show.

London Box Office customer

Once again please!

I seldom go to the theatre and saw this show on a visit to London. I thought it was brilliant. My teenage daughter and her friend thought the end was strange, but enjoyed the rest of it.

London Box Office customer

A show that grows on its audience.

Good theatre, helpful staff and clever simple stage set. An accomplished cast, musically energetic containing many dynamic and skilful individual performances. That said, we could not hear the quieter dialogue and so missed the delivery of humorous lines gauging the reaction of those nearer to the stage. The same for some of the words over the music at times, and thus the plot is supposed rather than heard. Some beautiful harmonies and clever accompanying music with good lighting effects. The little girl played her part brilliantly! However, honesty has to prevail and it was admired but not a show that had us tapping our feet, and humming at the bus stop afterwards, or feeling we would advise anyone they must see it. But then we are in our 70's and our grandchildren might well be impressed by the artists and love it! We enjoyed it overall.

London Box Office customer

Pretty good but expenisive

We enjoyed the show and thought that the second half was stronger stuff and worth waiting for' WE WERE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE LAYOUT OF THE THEATRE AND WERE DISMAYED BY THE POOR VIEW FROM THE DRESS CIRCLE. THERE WERE MANY EMPTY SEATS. MUCH OF THE AUDIENCE APPEARED TO BE COACH-LOADS OF YOUNGSTERS WHO MOVED AROUND A LOT AT THE START OF THE PERFORMANCE. WE PAID A PREMIUM FOR THE TICKETS AND SEEING THE SIZE O F THE AUDIENCE NUMBERS, I FEEL THAT DISCOUNTS WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE APPROPRIATE.. I WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER OFF WITH THE TOUTS. i SHALL BE MORE CIRCUMSPECT IN FUTURE AS FAR AS YOUR OFFERINGS ARE CONCERNED.

London Box Office customer

Once

Great show in a beautiful theatre. Bar on stage turned into a real bar for audience to buy drinks and socialise at the interval. Some unnecessary foul language in script.

London Box Office customer

Very entertaining show for ages from teens.

Once

The show was incredibly well performed and well worth watching. Nothing in it that I disliked and I would happily watch it again. Comic, yet with a very well thought out plot.

London Box Office customer

the story line is poor and slow I was going to walk out except I had paid so much .The Irish accent was terrible I am from Dublin very disappointing .The worse show I have seen in 40 years

London Box Office customer

Once -needs to be many times.

Just sio different to anything else i have ever seen in the West end

London Box Office customer

Wonderful show.

London Box Office customer

Poor story line, lead actor good musician but many of the caste did not speak very clearly!

London Box Office customer

Once- the stage musical

Very original staging for a simple love story. The music and choreography only added to the whole experience. Contains some adult language. Funny and moving. Just loved it.

London Box Office customer

disappointed in SOUND! couldn't hear it very well from Balcony

Dont bother with drinks on stage; not chilled enough

London Box Office customer

Brilliant show

Good story funny and great singing.

London Box Office customer

Great show

I had not heard of the show prior to my wife booking it. We both really enjoyed the show and surprised we had not heard of the show before. Great show, the cast were great and the two leads could really sing well.

London Box Office customer

Music was amazing!

Music was very good all the singing and playing of instruments was very impressive especially when they were dancing at the same time! The story line was a bit strange but the music made up for it!

London Box Office customer

Loved the intermingling on the stage

London Box Office customer

Repetitive and boring

London Box Office customer

Witty and Funny

Very good dialogue. The music was also quite good.

A Night in Dublin

We were very surprised that the cast were on stage before the planned start time. Particularly seeing as guests were also there! From start to end we were entertained with good music, good vocals and most of all tremendous humour. Great night for those who want something different.

London Box Office customer

Great music - shame about the very weak story line

Disappointing

The sameness of the music and wooden acting were utterly boring and sent us heading for the exit at interval.

London Box Office customer

a perfect piece of art

London Box Office customer

I was disappointed. I thought there was very little dancing, the atmosphere of the play was very daria and the music, apart from two or. three songs, really beautiful, were not worthy my 2:30 hours sitting in a theatre with no air conditioning. I would no

No air conditioning in the theatre, and the whole atmosphere of the play is not a joyful one.

A poor story, badly told,

It started well but then got worst, so that it fizzled out like a damp squid. The musician's were capable of so much more. sadly I will not recommend anybody to sit through it..

London Box Office customer

Fantiastic!

Beautifully staged, heartfellt show! My son (20yrs old) who is not easily impressed said it is the best show he's ever seen!

Absolutely Brilliant!

Very well worth a look

London Box Office customer

Once may not be enough.

A simple story given depth and feeing by a cast of multi talented, high energy young actors who acted, sang danced, and created moments of joy and sadness. Thecast seemed to be driven by a loveof the music they performed so .brilliantly.Iwould find it hard to believe that anyone could not leave the theatre with a warm glow after experiencing this treat,

London Box Office customer

A fabulous night out

This was a super show with lots of laughs, lovely music loved the way they started playing on the stage before the lights went down. Highly recommend it.

London Box Office customer

A Real surprise Gem

Take a hearing aid as the spoken word is hard to hear. Music excellent !!

London Box Office customer

Absolutely Fantastic

The music was absolutely amazing and the show had a mix of comedy and drama. Definitely a must see show suitable for the whole family.

London Box Office customer

Uplifting experience

This show was brilliant, with a real feel good factor. I especially liked the bar being on stage, it made it all so much more personal and interactive.

London Box Office customer

"ONCE" The Musical

Too much unnecessary strong language.

London Box Office customer

Good music!

awesome!

Firstly i love music, my parents are Irish and have always know a love of the people and the music. It is a great story which all people can relate to, everyone wants something and sometimes people give up trying . I found the show inspirational with a message of never giving up on your dreams. Also with both the girl and the guy..trying again with their relationships, it seems to give a message of work at and be happy with who you have and you can't always have who and what we want. I did love this show. It made me laugh and it made me cry. I took my 19yr old daughter who is a musician and is embarking on travelling the world and ended her relationship with her high school sweetheart of 3yrs in order to do this. So it really did move her. I would see it over and over again! Congrats to you all!

Review of Once The Musical

28 Oct 2014 in Reviews

Once The Musical A simple, no frills, heart wrenching production delivered with catchy original songs. The replacement cast is not quite up to scratch compared with the original, but this is definitely one to catch before it leaves the West End in March 2015.

Normally when a family member comes to stay, I inwardly groan. Now that’s not because I don’t love my family, but it does seem to be hard work taking tourists around the city of London. My flatmate on the other hand has a much more relaxed family, so when her sister came to stay with us I was excited at having another person to go to the theatre with. Not only an artistic soul like us, she is also applying for drama schools at the moment to do stage management and so was more than happy to tag along and pass comment on a musical with me. She really seemed the perfect choice to take along to the Phoenix Theatre and watch an Olivier award-winning musical before wandering to get a drink at half time from the on-stage bar and soak up the atmosphere.
