Once The Musical in London

Once The Musical, the proud winner of 8 Tony awards!

John Tiffany’s sparkling production of Once has netted an impressive eight Tony awards including Best New Musical. After a sell-out run at Dublin’s gaiety Theatre, it’s on the West End stage from spring 2013. The production also won an award for Best Musical by the New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critic Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards, so it has impeccable critical credentials.

Once - The story

Once is a delightful celebration of love, friendship and music. When an Irish busker and a young Czech mother with a shared passion for music meet, sparks fly as they explore their shared obsession through a series of stunning tunes. The songs they write create an unexpectedly deep connection and a tender romance is born…

A natural extension of the marvellous book and film

The popular and respected award winning Irish playwright and screenwriter Enda Walsh wrote the musical based on the motion picture, which was in turn written and directed by John Carney. As you can imagine, the stage version is equally enthralling.

Produced by Barbara Broccoli, John N. Hart Junior, Patrick Milling Smith, Frederick Zollo, Brian Carmody, Michael G. Wilson, Orin Wolf and Michael Rose Limited, it has been created in association with the clever people at the New York Theatre Workshop. What a treat!

Academy award winning music available online

The music and lyrics, by Glen Hansard (who wrote the score for The Commitments) and Markéta Irglová, won a coveted Academy Award. If you fall head over heels with it, you’re in luck – you can buy the original cast recording of the show via Masterwords Broadway, a label of Sony Masterworks, here: www.MasterworksBroadway.com

The scenes and costume designs are by Bob Crowley, lighting by Natasha Katz, sound by Clive Goodwin, musical supervision and orchestrations by Martin Lowe and movement by Steven Hoggett.

Friends enjoy trip to see Ronan Keating in Once

Very different type of show, clever staging, all cast excellent but Ronans voice made my heart sing. My friend and I loved the theatre, so ornate. Only downside was hearing the rumble of the underground, really didn't expect that.

worst performance ever seen

sound equipment let this show down badley, we were sat in the royal circle and were unable to hear the performers which made it difficult to follow the story line, badley produced alround, very little in the way of acting. I am a great fan of Ronan Keating but was very disappointed with this show

The first time I saw this show I had stall tickets this time I had next floor up these were better than the first as you saw more especially the scene looking down at Dublin. The actors were so versatile I loved everything. A special treat was Ronan who was fantastic My advice book now and don't miss out before it closes.

Not so Cinderella story

This is a show about all those Cinderellas who never get to go to the ball, and the most moving moment comes in the recording studio when they each reveal the hidden hinterland of their emotional and daily lives in a sequence that is like a low-key version of A Chorus Line. The best scene is notably where Guy and Girl argue their case with a bank manager for a loan, during which the audience simultaneously glimpse the frustrations of other everyday lives going nowhere through choreography. In many ways this is a lovely show, made all the better by the fact that it doesn’t follow either the traditional love story or the failure-to-fame story formula - on the contrary, it is full of ambiguities.

'Once' in this case is not enough.

Once is a great musical combining Irish and Czech styles in an Irish bar. The bar is so realistic that you can go on stage before the start of the show, and during the interval to order your drinks. Members of the cast also play on the stage while you are there drinking. Just like the real thing!

This is an excellent production! Ronan Keating, playing the lead, was even better than expected. Also, with regards to the theatre itself, the seats in the back row of the upper circle had a perfectly good view with no restrictions, which made for great value.

Amazing :-)

It was billed as a musical but I would class it more of a play, which doesn't mean it was any less good but was expecting all the pomp and ceremony of a "musical" like Charlie or Wicked which it clearly wasn't. However if you like Ronan Keating you'll love the music and the whole show.

A show that grows on its audience.

Good theatre, helpful staff and clever simple stage set. An accomplished cast, musically energetic containing many dynamic and skilful individual performances. That said, we could not hear the quieter dialogue and so missed the delivery of humorous lines gauging the reaction of those nearer to the stage. The same for some of the words over the music at times, and thus the plot is supposed rather than heard. Some beautiful harmonies and clever accompanying music with good lighting effects. The little girl played her part brilliantly! However, honesty has to prevail and it was admired but not a show that had us tapping our feet, and humming at the bus stop afterwards, or feeling we would advise anyone they must see it. But then we are in our 70's and our grandchildren might well be impressed by the artists and love it! We enjoyed it overall.

Pretty good but expenisive

We enjoyed the show and thought that the second half was stronger stuff and worth waiting for' WE WERE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE LAYOUT OF THE THEATRE AND WERE DISMAYED BY THE POOR VIEW FROM THE DRESS CIRCLE. THERE WERE MANY EMPTY SEATS. MUCH OF THE AUDIENCE APPEARED TO BE COACH-LOADS OF YOUNGSTERS WHO MOVED AROUND A LOT AT THE START OF THE PERFORMANCE. WE PAID A PREMIUM FOR THE TICKETS AND SEEING THE SIZE O F THE AUDIENCE NUMBERS, I FEEL THAT DISCOUNTS WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE APPROPRIATE.. I WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER OFF WITH THE TOUTS. i SHALL BE MORE CIRCUMSPECT IN FUTURE AS FAR AS YOUR OFFERINGS ARE CONCERNED.

Firstly i love music, my parents are Irish and have always know a love of the people and the music. It is a great story which all people can relate to, everyone wants something and sometimes people give up trying . I found the show inspirational with a message of never giving up on your dreams. Also with both the girl and the guy..trying again with their relationships, it seems to give a message of work at and be happy with who you have and you can't always have who and what we want. I did love this show. It made me laugh and it made me cry. I took my 19yr old daughter who is a musician and is embarking on travelling the world and ended her relationship with her high school sweetheart of 3yrs in order to do this. So it really did move her. I would see it over and over again! Congrats to you all!
