In this exploration of post-war disillusionment, Susan Traherne is a former Special Operations Executive agent who loses her sense of wartime purpose as Britain enters an era of peace. After working behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied France during the Second World War, she feels bored and disillusioned with the mundane nature of her life now, as the increasingly depressed wife of a diplomat whose career she has destroyed. As her mental health declines, mirroring the crises in the ruling class of post-war Britain, Susan becomes more and more self-absorbed and destructive.
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) will make her National Theatre debut in this new production of the award-winning play by David Hare, stepping into the shoes of other acclaimed actresses who have played the powerful role of Susan, including Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett. First performed in 1978, Plenty is inspired by the fact that 75% of women engaged in wartime SOE operations divorced in the immediate post-war years. The title derives from the notion, which ultimately proved untrue, that the post-war era would be a time of 'plenty' for Britain. Former National Theatre Director Richard Eyre directs, marking a celebrated reunion between Eyre and Hare. The play will be staged ahead of its 50th anniversary and Hare's 80th birthday.
Book now and don't miss this powerful exploration of a nation in crisis that feels every bit as relevant today as it did when it was written.
