Summerfolk in London
Written in 1904 by Russian playwright Maxim Gorky, Summerfolk is a dramatised commentary on the Russian bourgeois class and the changes occurring around them in the early 20th century. It's a hot, beautiful summer in 1905 and the Russian elite retreat to the countryside to swim, drink, and pass their time in passionate but often unhappy love affairs - all the while blissfully unaware of the looming revolution that will change their world forever.
Described as the most Chekhovian of Gorky's plays, Summerfolk is filled with rich, eccentric characters living in a world of 'false hopes and unfulfilled promises', and features a searing and darkly witty commentary on class and privilege in a turbulent political era. It first premiered at the Komissarzhevskaya Theatre in Saint Petersburg in 1904, and now you can reexperience this marvel of 20th century writing here in London. Deputy Artistic Director Robert Hastie (Standing at the Sky's Edge) will direct this thrilling revival, updated for a modern audience by Nina Raine (Consent) and Moses Raine (Donkey Heart).
Witness a piece of classic Russian literature in London with this dark, clever, and astoundingly witty piece of social satire.

Distinctly AverageThe adaptation was crude and unfocused. The lead female character was poorly portrayed. She never hit the right moments or showed any development of character. The direction was unfocussed. The whole point of the play was somehow obscured if not completely lost. On the whole, it was a little disappointing.

EntertainingThe actors were fantastic. The staging was superb. I didn't catch every word. Maybe i was too far away. I loved the ending

AverageThe Play stayed too much in Russia 19th century. I didn’t think about my/our fin de siecle feeling today. And the music and costumes and stage and lighting were just kind of beautiful. Kitsch! The story under the surface wasn’t told effectively enough.

Fine cast, but after having read only good - if not great - reviews, I was somewhat disappointedThe use of a speaker/mic system would immensely improve enjoyment for the slightly hard of hearing

I was disappointed. I did not like the set. I had seen it in Moscow many years ago. With silver Birch trees.it didn't feel like Russia. Some of the acting was good, some mediocre. It didn't work for me.

Mixed BagI’m sure the play is very worthy but I found some speech patterns and acoustics hard to hear. And since it is a very wordy play it was rather frustrating.

Hedonistic summerfolkHedonism with an undertone of emptiness. A bit on the long side, but nice acting and plenty of laughs.
