Teeth ‘n’ Smiles in London
Starring:
Rebecca Lucy Taylor
In this landmark 50th anniversary revival of David Hare’s defiant and rollicking musical about a bitter rock star and her washed-up band on the eve of a defining performance, step back into the gritty glamour of the 1970s for a theatrical experience packed with a classic rock score and an emotionally stirring story that pays homage to rock 'n' roll.
Why you should see Teeth 'n' Smiles
- Join in this celebration of the 50th anniversary of this timeless play, which feels just as meaningful today in its portrayal of fame and a fall from glory as it did when it was first performed.
- If you’re a fan of rock 'n' roll, you’ll love this blazing homage to the genre, which takes audiences back into the churning era of the 1960s and 1970s, with a perspective that’s both nostalgic and cynical.
- Rebecca Lucy Taylor, the cherished musician and songwriter known also as Self Esteem, will star as the aging rock star Maggie, bringing her own spin and some of her own music to this iconic role.
What is Teeth 'n' Smiles about?
In David Hare’s rebellious, trailblazing musical, Teeth 'n' Smiles, follows Maggie Frisby: once the voice of 60s counterculture, now washed-up, broke, and disillusioned, with her band on the verge of break-up. Now this tired old rock group must try to bring back the magic during their performance at the May Ball in Cambridge, while grappling with the instability of their role in the future of rock 'n' roll.
This timeless play was first performed in 1975, with Dame Helen Mirren in the starring role. Now Rebecca Lucy Taylor, also known as Self Esteem, will star as Maggie in this sparkling new revival directed by Daniel Raggett, which comes to the West End in time for its 50th anniversary. It features music by Nick Bicat and lyrics by Tony Bicat, with new additional music by Taylor herself. Taylor, returning to the stage after her run as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, said, ‘I love to challenge myself in new forms and I can’t wait to slap you round the face with Maggie’. Raggett added, ‘its spirit of rock n roll revolution/desperate howl of defiance feels just as pertinent now as it did in 1975’.
Don’t miss this rollicking tribute to rock 'n' roll and 1970s counterculture that’s still as searing and resonant as it was 50 years ago.
