The Great Indaba is inspired by the true story of an extraordinary meeting that took place in South Africa in May 1997 and helped pave the way for the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which ended three decades of The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It dramatises how Nelson Mandela, at the head of his newly formed National Unity Government, was crucial in leading diplomatic negotiations between bitter rival factions from Northern Ireland, using lessons learned from South Africa's experiences with apartheid to inspire the 29 Northern Irish politicians who came as part of the multi-party delegation.
National Theatre Director Indhu Rubasingham (The Father and the Assassin, The Jungle Book) directs this new play by Moira Buffini, reuniting the pair after their hit production of Handbagged in 2010. It's a powerful and inspiring story of diplomacy and peace, with a message that feels all too relevant to our divided times, nearly thirty years after the Good Friday Agreement was signed. 'Indaba' is a Zulu and Xhosa word meaning an important meeting or discussion. The Great Indaba explores the intricate conversations and interpersonal dynamics that went into this meeting in order to ask the question: How do warring factions overcome years of bloodshed to achieve peace?
Don't miss this powerful look into a pivotal piece of modern history.
